I've been really into Alex Grey's paints for a couple years
now. Does anyone else care for his stuff at all? I just got
a poster of the piece "wonder". I like it a lot... reminds
me of how it felt to be a kid.

I've got Transfigurations, it's amazing. I met him in New
York before the Tool show at Radio City. Greatest show ever,
they thanked Alex Gray and put a spot light on him. Applause
followed for several minutes.

x tomatic: interesting how a meaningless label like "new
age" can be used to dismiss a body of work. alex grey is a
buddhist, actually, and the spiritual imagery does not
necessarily make his artwork "new age." imo.

but still it looks like a bunch of new age crap, the guy's
obviously full of himself with his quotes and ideas for a
temple, I'm like surprised he hasn't been on Oprah?

please tell us, what is "new age"? is it crap because it is
"new age"? i don't intend to criticize you for having a
dissenting opinion, but i am curious as to how you came to
your opinion, and i want to know what you mean by "new age."
i do hope you have the opportunity to experience yourself
the invention and dedication of someone like alex grey.

i used drop acid with this geek named Alex Grey. he was
always saying 'kind'. LIke "that bud is kind" or "these
shoes are kind" or "these eggs and bacon are kind"
he also kinda smelled like pee.

i don't think he was the artist though.. where is the artist
Alex Grey from?

Alex Gray is old, and from New York. I don't think they're
the same. ha.

I really don't see how I am obliged to explain to you why I
feel this way about his work, I just do okay? I'm like
totally fine with it if you think it's the best that ever
happened to you, I just felt like you to express my feelings
on his works and new age crap is what comes to mind then.

he's full of himself because he loves his own vision and is
able to receive spiritual ecstasy through it? is that a
healthy judgement to be making?

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2003-04-23 20:07 [#00665634]

i think its self explanatory. it is "new age" in the sense
that i equate it with new age philosophy on metaphysics,
atleast this is what i do upon first viewing the work. it is
"spiritual" in nature. perhaps pseudo was unnecessary.
however, i highly dislike this artwork.

well, you can't blame a man for painting his visionary
states, and it's kind of silly to place him in that "new
age" category which is no more rational a description than
hitler's aryan race. it includes everything from phony
psychic nuts to seriously inspired artists who know what
their on about, and anything too syncretistic for the
accuser's comfort.

also, many who don't like his work from the site might
appreciate his unbelievable art if they saw it in detail,
from his books or in a museum. it's some of the richest
artwork i've ever seen.

It's fucking breathtaking is what it is. Anyone who was
lucky enough to see Tools last tour were able to see many of
Gray's work larger than life.

In person his work has the ability to bring out emotions and
thoughts you never new existed.

Anyone interested in philoophy should chech out Ken Wilbur.
Very interesting ideas, especially his "Integral Vision".

breathtaking indeed. i've never experienced so much empathy
for a visual artist until i saw alex grey's work. he paints
experiences that verify that my own experiences are not
completely subjective. i'm very grateful for the man's
work.

well, i respect your enjoyment (probably an understatement)
of this mans work. but, art must first cause some kind of
reaction within me for me to sustain interest, and this did
nothing. i won't defend why i dislike it, but i dislike it
nonetheless.

i guess ultimately my point would be that there is no new
age philosphy, but rather a large group of philosophies are
put into "new age," many of which have nothing to do with
eachother. it's mostly a bias against certain lifestyles
and aesthetics and most importantly, eastern-western
syncretism.

alex is a practicing buddhist, so if he is new age, buddhism
is new age. or maybe all paths outside of western tradition
are "new age?" it's really quite absurd and those who use
the term come off as very ignorant and judgemental to those
who are educated in the subject.

funny, i dislike "western tradition" and never implied that
"all paths outside of" it are new age or anything along
those lines. i'm sorry i used the term, which i equate with
enya music and windchimes. perhaps you could step off your
high horse for a moment, oh "educated" one, and forgive me.

fair enough, x-tomatic, i was asking in the spirit of the

and your summation seemed provocative, if hasty.

i thought you meant educated as in educated about eastern
non western tradition, as thats the context you seemed to be
using it in that sentence. your overall tone was
condescending as well.

offline plaidzebra from so long, xlt on 2003-04-23 21:17 [#00665710]
Points: 5678 Status: Lurker

and i agree, "new age" is frequently used as a thoughtless,
critical epithet, and its use begs explanation. saying that
"new age crap" is self explanatory is evidence that the user
believes that his or her own prejudices are self-evident.
we should be honored that our fellow xltrons encourage us to
articulate our thoughts. we are in the world together.

some give in to the temptation to condescend, and others
give in to the temptation to react to perceived
condescension. now that we've acknowledged our shared
ignorance, let's return to our meditation circle. take your
crystal in your right hand, rotate your pyramid and say
Aummmmmmmmmmmmm ; )

mental states that he achieved through the use of LSD.

yeah, sorry for the tone. i get over-reactive and say much
more than i need to. i didn't mean to be condescending
though. i don't think myself above you, i just pointed out
that you made an unwarranted judgment. you clearly didn’t
understand that “new-age” is a derogatory term, an
artificial category (as an analogy, bats were at one time
considered to be closer to birds than rodents in relation)
and you clearly don’t understand the artist you judged
anyhow. you were being condescending to me indirectly when
you judged grey because i have spiritual inclinations very
similar to the man.

when I saw tool not too long ago when they came round I was
absolutely floored by alex gray's work blown up all huge and
gorgeous and backed by such powerful music... new age? I
always thought that his stuff was very dark and
introspective at times, not to mention clearly more
transcendentalist and philosophical than religiously themed.
but that's just one girl's opinion

actually it's DMT...not really acid (thought i'm not saying
that he doesn't do tha shiz...) he's been dubbed the DMT
artist...

infact, IMHO, i feel that the latest TOOL/Alex Grey
corelations have been majorly DMT influenced...especially a
majority of the "concepts" behind lateralus.

nanotech, have you experienced dmt? dubbed the dmt artist
by whom? what imagery/forms suggest a dmt influence? what
are the thematic concepts of lateralus? i don't like tool,
so i am unfamiliar. incidentally, i have read interviews in
which alex grey acknowledges the influence of psychedelic
substances, and i only recall him mentioning lsd. i don't
think he's the sort of person who takes such an experience
lightly (that is to say, recreationally). i'm sure he's
equally familiar with psilocybin.
