Remix vs Cover?

Sorry if I sound dumb, but what is the difference between a
remix and a cover? Is a remix just the original song
rearranged? Thanks.

I would compare a song with a house.

A cover is when a group builds exactly the same house, but
with different (=their own) materials.

A remix is when they use the bricks from a house to build a
different-looking house.

Does this explanation make sense?
Not really I think .
There's too many exceptions.
but I thought, let's post it anyway.

Hmm,

for me a cover is when a band plays a song by another band,
and leaves most of it almost the same.

A remix is when someone takes a song and 'messes' around
with it, like putting a beat by a rock song or so, taking
different parts and place them in different order, repeat
one part some more, or just take the vocals from one part,
or...

There are off course major exceptions.

well that answered my question i guess, but can you tell me
if this is a remix or a cover (or neither haha):

i decide i want to do a remix of a song for the ae remix
contest, so i remake the main melody of that song with my
own instruments, and then make the rest of the song nothing
at all like the original. what is this: remix, cover, or
neither?

Sometimes it's not clear to me if something is a remix or a
cover.

Isn't it also :
A remix is on request , and for a cover copyrights are
paid. ??????????
or am I totally wrong?

that is an exception , I think.

But, if you -as the 'creator' of something new- , call it a
remix, then people will look at it as a remix.
no?

Why should you?

I thought there were no set rules as on how to "remix" it.

Why?
Why cancel?

You've got nothing to loose!
If your song is not a remix anymore, at least you made it!
and I doubt they will be very strict with the cover/remix
thing.

I think 'remix' can't be defined, because it is a very
creative thing, in which everything is possible.
I was only trying in my previous post.

originally remixes were somebody rearranging from master
tapes. but nowadays the line between remixing and
reinterpreting (cover version) has become blurred by the
remixer adding their own style / samples into the mix.
