laptop djs?

hey,

in a recent interview richard d. james mentioned that he
switched to mp3 when dj'ing.

is there anyone among us who has some real (professional)
experiences doing mp3-djing?

i am fooling araound with my older notebook and traktor from
native instruments - but without any additional hardware.

if you are laptop/notebook-djs: what set-up do you
recommend?

thx,
andreas

traktor 2 in tandem with a midi controller is a brilliant
setup, you can control all the filters, eq, crossfaders etc
with midi rotaries, makes everything really flexible and
responsive. the oxygen 8 is a great little controller, but
evolution have a 16 rotary one thats cool also.

make sure you buy a soundcard that has two separate outputs
so you can assign one as your main output to the pa and one
for your headphones...i use the m-audio quattro, which gives
me really low latency.

whats the difference?
i like it one way or another

the difference is a disc jockey uses vinyl discs

a laptop jockey steals songs and plays them without paying
for or getting them as promo's from friends / etc

the difference is one is an artform, and another is a way
for lazy computer geeks to feel cool

ok i disagree with that :)

are you saying you cant play your own mp3?
and as far as i know many vinyl dj's are not using their own
stuff

what i meant with i like it one way or another is, that i
dont care whether is a vinyl or mp3 performamnce as long as
the music is cool
lately i been hearing better music from laptop sets!

im talking about djing - not about "live sets"

if someone uses a laptop to mix songs made by someone else -
its lame - ill tell you why - same im mixing drum n bass
(which i do) with vinyl records (which i do) - it is hard to
beat match and keep things tight when mixing two tracks
together

now with a laptop

i can download those tracks, not pay for them, which helps
the producer not make more tracks, and AUTOMATICALLY sync
the beats with the click of a button, this takes all the
physical work out it

if you are a producer and use it for a live set its only
about 1/8 more acceptable - twirl some knobs live - i dont
want to see someone playing with a laptop for $20 - i can
walk around my campus and see that shit for free

its boring

vinyl djing is definitely more physicaly demanding for a dj,
but the final effect on the "consumer" is the same or even
worse if the dj is not any good :)

"i dont
want to see someone playing with a laptop for $20 "
you see that is your problem-i go to hear music not to see
someone djing :)
im listening with my eyes closed so it doesnt really matter
if it comes out of an radio :)

i go for the loudness

i go for the music and for loudness also

BUT - why would i want to watch someone play a song behind a
laptop - at least with bands they rock it out live and play
the machines - with a laptop you could just be playing wav
files while looking like a goon behind your compy6000 - its
boring - really boring

yeah, it could be boring watching-i agree on that, but then
again there's plenty of vinyl dj's playing records and not
doing much work but jumping around decks like nutters-is
that better to watch?

there are some awesome dj's with great technique (like umek
for instance) but there are plenty of fake dj's

and the thing is (from my experience) computer made music is
far better than music made with decks
and as i said i go to gigs to hear great music not to watch
dj...

true - bogdan play a laptop and dances and goes mental and
he's about the only laptop jockie i think i would pay to see
again

a lot of dj's suck - true

yeah i can dig your take on being there for the music, but
its cool to hear a dj mix two songs and in essence make a
new one out of the two

you know?

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2003-04-10 10:08 [#00642690]
Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

i agree with that!

the thing is i dont know many dj's doing anything else but
techno and this is kind of boring music (not always)
the music i like to hear on gigs is quite difficult to do
with vinyls i guess (im not a dj so i cant tell, but i take
your word for it!)

yeah its different - when i was in miami it was house, which
i HATE -

i hate the "rave" scene more than anything in this world

i spin really dark and angry drum n bass - and ill walk
around a "rave" or a "show" wearing jeans, sneakers, and a
tight sweater - all the other kids wear big UFO pants and
all this raver shit - yucky

ill mix dnb then drop like two bogdan, squarepusher, scud
type tracks at the end to FUCK the dancers up and make some
ear drums bleed - afx's fly coma remix is good for this too

im very different though - cause i started with experimental
then went to dnb - so i have a different take on it

well I saw Aphex Twin using a laptop at glastonbury last

im not going anywhere hehe

another thing occured to me (as i was thinking that im going
to see mu-ziq on 19th)-many of idm musicians are using
both-laptop and decks, so how can you tell what he's doing?
the music is usually too loud to notice if its from the
vinyl or not.

hey you're the kinda guy I dig.
I'm into everything aggresive/fast stuff..
and vinyl.. I don't really see a choice.

"the difference is one is an artform, and another is a
way
for lazy computer geeks to feel cool
"

Not sure this is 100% true, but that's how it feels like.
Anyone can beatmix on a computer... but doing that in real
life (computer isn't real life, is it?) that's a whole other
deal!

Though I wear big pants when I go out dancing (but I am the
only one to do so, hehe, so I don't follow any dresscode (in
Sweden that is)) I do it cause I feel like I can throw
myself around more freely.
Anything aggressive... and fast.
I like it fa-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-st!
(I'm into hardcore/gabber)

If I lived in the US, I'd come to watch you DJ... and to
listen of course ;)
no seriously I usually dance, but at one time the music has
to slow down, and then where should I look - and what do I
want to see.
I don't want to see some geek with a laptop.

right? :)

it's becoming so fragmented, we judge artists by their means
of creating their material, and i am against that, i don't
really give a shit if a laptops used or a deck, whichever
medium enables the artist to express themselves as best as
possible i am cool with. so what if it's some geek behind a
computer, still takes skill, maybe not as much in the
physical department, of controlling the vinyl, but hey u
still need the ability to control shit on the computer, and
then some.

ultimately, the end product is what mattes, we are
discussing music arent we? or is this just another
meaningless flame thread, for some people who might be
jealous of the fact that people on pissy little notebooks
are making better shit than u do on ur fuckin decks, its
called evolution and music goes through those evolutions
too, i hate people who stick to traditions or old
technologies like glue, just grow learn, move on and use
what is available....

well.. I'm sure I'd rather see him
spin some vinyl! =)
laptop is just lazyness and boring.
I just feel like there are too much computers in my life,
and I couldn't stand DJing on a computer to... then they'd
invade every part of my life.
Now I DJ on my puter sometimes, but that's because I have no
other option, and I only DJ at home for myself (usually when
I am drunk and before I go out)...

It's always the final -product- that matters.
But I don't feel you can do better on a laptop than on vinyl
- if you can, well maybe you should practice some more on
your vinylskills...
that's how I feel..
