something about using too many of their promotional gift
certificates.

now I am "no longer welcome" in their store. oh, and by the
way "warmest regards from the Amazon team".

I would feel sort of bad, but I have been making a lot of
purchases there that I wouldn't normally. Without this
promotional incentive I have no reason to shop there.

Just ordered new Gescom e.p. direct from Skam since Warp
have sold out of the CD. And I'm on a promise for Making
Orange Things and 237 0894 to replace my scratched copy in
the next few days.

" something about using too many of their promotional gift
certificates "
i don't think ther is a policy against that, is it?
any way if you are not doing anything illegal you should
start some legal action agains tehm i sure you can make good
money starting for the false accusation of fraud

where did you get the gift certificats from? Would they work
at amazon.co.uk?

Haha sorry to hear that, but wasn't it you that was telling
people a couple of weeks ago that they could get £5 off
every purchase at amazon by setting up a new email account
for every new order?! (I may be mistaken)

offline martinhm from York (United Kingdom) on 2003-04-10 06:41 [#00642412]

That sounds like something I would have said. But as I have
a million email addresses anyway I made sure that they all
got a gift certificate.

Presumably Amazon's intention is that each gift certificate
is used to hook a new user who then goes on to make numerous
future purchases. However I was making a separate purchase
with each certificate. It's not like you can accumulate
loads of certificates and get something expensive for free.

Yeah, I kind of feel guilty, but then offers are always
taken advantage of.

I like the stories in the paper about supermarkets
mispricing stuff or putting on a 3 for 2 offer plus a £1
off, or something which means that they are effectively
paying people to take stuff away. Before they realise,
everybody in the store has walked away with money in their
pocket.

well there are plenty. I always used
warp/skam/boomkat/opal/sisterray/juno, but when this offer
came along it made things alot cheaper. I shall just go back
to using them.

hehe.

at least the smaller stores have a more personal touch. I
can't count the number of times I asked whether amazon would
be stocking a certain CD when it is released, only to get an
automated response telling me that "We do not have that CD
currently in stock. Please check back later to see if it has
become available".

i use juno regularly, theyve been excellent for me. usually
get it within 48 hours.

what are opalmusic like for turnaround time? i've been
thinking of using them recently, and i look at their site a
lot to check for new stuff

Amazon did that themselves recently, advertising a PC at
£7. They had to shut the site down.

But my g/f was doing what you have been doing. Its not their
intention but tough shit. they are a big company and deserve
some Robin Hood type shit. Pat yourself on the back matey;
you are a friend of the working class.

They dish out money-off vouchers like you get on food
products. But the idea is you get one and use the offer
once. But they way around it is to change your email every
time. I'm sure its not illegal; just not what they want.

As our friend said, they just want to hook new customers.
Its a marketing strategy.

Or have they banned your I.P Adress from their site?

Some promotional offers come in the paper, on boxes of
Pringles, through either websites (I think another.com gave
them out when you signed up for an email address a while
ago).

The referral offer works by you sending them the email
address of a 'new' customer, they then send him a voucher.
When he signs up and uses the voucher, you also get a
voucher. If the new customer is actually you at a different
address (who doesn't have more than one email address?), you
still have to make a purchase to receive the 'thank you'
voucher. Like I said, you don't really get the vouchers for
free.

Desdemona> you have to go through a certain link to get the
voucher.

They have left themselves open a bit I think. If you are a
new customer and you visit amazon you get a little pop-up
window telling you to sign up and get an introductory
voucher. However if you try to use the same credit card as
you have used for a previous purchase they will send you a
friendly email telling you that you are not entitled to a
voucher.

If they have the facility to compare credit cards to make
sure that all accounts use a unique one (if that is their
policy) why not apply it across the board?

earthleakage> opal are usually pretty good for turnaround,
2-3 days usually. Not so hot on email correspondance though.
I emailed to cancel an order I just made in error (you can't
do it online) but didn't hear anything back until it had
been posted to me. I sent it back afterwards and they
refunded everything except the postage.

i tried to buy something with my old and void credit card
number once.
Amazon were trying to charge me for something i'd ordered,
but the account no longer existed.
i was getting letters and phone calls from "fraud
management" at my bank.
they werent happy...oops!

d'oh. I'll try to avoid trouble like that hopefully. Nothing
is ever in the consumer's favour. I remember when my wages
were payed into an old account of mine accidentally.
Theoretically it should have bounced back, but my old
account number had been recycled to a new customer who now
had a month's worth of my salary sitting in their account.
That took a while to sort out.
