Get the Homeless off the streets

Simple solution to a huge blight in America.

Dude I always thought that all the homeless should be
rounded up and placed in a petting zoo. Kids could buy
alcohal-soaked food pellets for a qarter from a bubble-gum
machine and feed the bums while they pet them.

That is my dream!

I don't think that address a single social situation beside
that of society needing others pain to fulfill their own
pleasure.

I deal with bums daily here in Ann Arbor and after a while I
couldn't help but just become rude towards them. How long
do you give them the spare change in your pocket before they
become old friends happily greeting you under the awning of
some trendy piece of shit store. In fact I think we should
rip them of any smidgen of any dignity they could possibly
have left. They don't even bother to remember your face
when you look them in the eye. They have no style. That's
the worst part. The reach around, heh. That's what they
give you, right then and there.

I'm talking about all those people in NYC or whatever.
These people here have a system built around the 10¢
deposits of cans and bottles. Like that essay stated they
can sustain their lives with recyclables. But there are
only so many public trash cans in the minute city of Ann
Arbor and I'm sure the homeless have some kind of ghetto
territory gang shit going on. Is that why they ask for
change?

Damn. What an annoyance.
McDonald's is always hiring. Anyone. I know, I worked
there for nearly 5 years. MadTV once did a spoof ad for
McDumpster's. That was some funny shit.

I meant I'm not talking about the people in NYC.
Damn, I'm a frigging idiot.

no I get you, I think we can make homelessness illegal, and
enforce what the author said

I think it'd work, and I feel your angst with the situation
in a small town.

Maybe the company that makes BVD's could deport them to a
sweat shop where everyone stinks and then they could get
laid when they're not working for 23¢ an hour like they're
used to anyways.

I think it could be like the days of the "New Deal" by FDR.

He fucking had out of work, trucked out to the dessert. He
had them dig a hug ditch, then trucked them home.

He then trucked out more people, and had them fill in the
ditch. Just to get people working again.

I think this could work, and possibly work well.

I think bums could also do a lot of good if they hung out
with pro-lifers. Like everytime there is an anti-abortion
rally the homeless could show up and follow someone home
like a lost puppy dog.

Don't think that would work well for the homeless locals who
are always along my daily route - I'm really not sure all of
them could stand up straight again if they bent over to pick
something up.

When I was a kid I wanted to be homeless..
I mean I wanted to be on my own. Not having a fucking job to
go to. Just doing what I feel like all day - society will
prevent that you know (unless I get the job of my dreams).
Not sure it's my dream anyway, but it should be everybodies
right to do what they feel like...
we need to rebuild the society from scratch!

BUt that requires people to work... if they were
able/prepared to do that they could get a "normal" job.

After I graduated high school I went traveling. I started
with spending alot of time listening to homeless people and
their stories. But really, they are totally pathetic and
the majority of their stories are lame and not fun to listen
to. I ended up hanging out with gutter punks in Roanoke, VA
and then my boredom declined a bit.

I'm a tv kid. I need bleeps of entertainment. Humans can't
offer that. So being homeless has no grounds within my own
personal sanity. Unless I met some elves in the woods.

I began reading your post and when I had gotten to "I
started
with spending alot of time listening to homeless people and
their stories
"
I thought like hey, this guy's gotto write a book about
that!
It just seemed like the perfect book to me "homeless people
- their own stories"...
I mean, maybe it's not a happy book (they didn't make it
really, did they),
but I think that's a book that I'd like to read if it was
interesting (and not like you described reality).

Most homeless people are on drugs. You have to round them up
and get them off the streets and off drugs and put them in
hostels and do it in one full sweep.

yeah...
that plus they don't sleep as much as they need to, which
makes them weird.

Seeing homeless people on the streets gets people down. It
depresses people so you have to get them off the streets.
There is absolutely no need for them to be there but we all
know why they're there - you just have to do deal with it.

offline BlatantEcho from All over (United States) on 2003-04-10 12:27 [#00642962]

so we make homelessness illegal, and then get them jobs
recycling

works fine if you ask me, doesn't require much more than a
few army trucks in a few cities to round them up, temperary
housing, and then they have jobs and can get to life again.

If they quit, well, homelessness = illegal, so they can go
to jail.

seems to work out easily.

at least their forced to bath in prison
i know i wouldn't wanna rape a dirty bum
but a clean inmate is a totally different story

i'd say writing a book about homeless peoples' stories could
be interesting... a heard alot about aliens, the dark side
of the moon, abstract spiritualty, etc etc

if you wanna read a really cool book about homeless I
suggest 'The Mole People' by Jennifer Toth
it's all about the people living in NYC in the sewers and
below the subways
Really interesting shit!

many of these people are homeless because they are too
crazy, drunk and or retarded to hold jobs. this is why they
sit on benches talking to themselves and eating butter.
what i don't get, is homeless people here in seattle. its
so cold and wet. if they had any smarts they would migrate
south to a warmer climate where food grows on trees and
sleeping outside won't give you hypothermia.

are there homeless people in alaska? where the hell do they
sleep?

Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell is a good
book about homeless people.

we've got homeless here in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the dead
of winter with 6 inches of snow
but I figure Eskimoes are a form of native and if they don't
work hard and live in balance with their environment they'll
starve or freeze. No room for laziness there.

see, you make that shit illegal, and make a job sector
(recylcing) that ONLY homeless people can occupy, and get
them on their feet.

I mean, if it flops, wtf, you didn't recycle enough, not
like it costs the taxpayers much, and it forces the issue.

I say we do it, fucking just take action instead of
lawmakers with thumbs up their butts and mayors faking
cleaning up their cities.

Great idea! What an excellent way to deal with two problems
at once... brilliant. Problem is ofcourse the homeless won't
be very motivated to recycle our junk if they are simply
forced to do so. We need people to make sure they'll do
their jobs properly. Maybe give them cattle-prods, that'll
motivate those lazy bastards!
What other useless members of our society shall we force to
watch over the homeless? The smokers? The handicapped?
People on wellfare?

I know it's an important book though.

I don't think they are useless, I think it can simply take
care of two problems at once.

Not as a social tool, but as a way to get people off the
street, and get them jobs, without much fuss, and with
things they already generally do well.

btw: I penned that article, and appreciate all the comments.

I think we could swing it, and get on with biggere problems.

Down and out is good- like Hunter S. Thompson's writing it's
not your usual liberal nonsense that you get from "insider's
stories" type journalism. It's an honest, objective look at
homelessness based on personal experience. Really helps you
understand homeless people's point of view more.
