Does anyone know what RDJ\'s favourite albums are?

ken from Ireland on 2001-10-11 23:59 [#00040382]

He rarely mentions records he like\'s by other artists....in
one of the interviews he says that his favourite music is
his own.....which is great....it\'s what you strive for when
you make music, film, books whatever.....anyone know what
albums he loves by other people?????

Aron? from Canada on 2001-10-12 01:14 [#00040386]

I'm guessing that he likes most of the artists on Rephlex,
beacuse why would he sign artists he doesn't like?

Stockhausen, Underground Resistance,
Composers of Leningrad, Erik Satie, Debussy, Derrick May,
early 808 State, old Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Juan
Atkins, Joe Meek...

In interviews he's said he likes squarepusher, cylob and
eric satie, I havn't heard the latter. I sifted through
interviews mostly to find out the answer to the ? you asked,
(if his music affected me so greatly, surely I'd like what
he likes. And I certainly did.)

balthus from europe on 2001-10-12 10:14 [#00040467]

yes, people like erik satie... and philip glass.

w etc - you got to listen to satie. but of course it's not
electronic, satie is not around anymore since 1925. there
are similarities to aphex. satie had many followers who
where influenced by him, his pieces had strange and funny
names, his music was strange but also beautiful, he composed
'ambient music' (musique d'ameublement), the first in
fact... mostly he composed piano music. I can recommend the
pieces froides (frozen pieces), the nocturnes, trois
morceaux en forme de poire (three pieces in the form of a
pear... but they are in fact 7 pieces), the sarabandes, the
gnossiennes (and there are a lot more!). you certainly know
on of the gymnopedies (but perhaps not by name)...

in the groove interview he also said that he purchased 3000
cd's last year and downloaded the songs he likes, selling
the cd's again in a second hand record store. he said that
one of his last cd's was a lou reed album.

Thanks for the erik satie suggestions. My favorite piano
compositions are "fur elise" (either by mozart or bach I
think) and a song from a cd called "frederic chopin
1810-1849" called "prelude op. 28/15 in d flat major
raindrop (4:48)" And also quite a few other compositions
from that album, the mentioned tune is so depressing but
filled with courage sort of, it's one of my favorite
compositions anywhere. (he also makes that famous
gravyardish song on this album.)

i'm interested in what he likes, i probably wouldn't have
gotten into Stockhausen had him and Bjork name dropped him.

ceephax acid crew and in talking about listening to unknown
artists mp3's on the web he said 'he won't listen to them if
in the write ups the artist say iit sounds like aphex,
squarepusher or autechre but something more interesting like
venetian snares or slub.' this was two years ago so it fits
with this thread like a glove.

he chose all of these in an interview;
"· Drexciya The Quest
· Erik Satie 'Trois Gymnopédies'
· Return of the DJ's
· Squarepusher Big Loada
· Luke Vibert Big Soup
· Batucada The Sound Of The Favelas
· Best of Acid 1
· Ween Pod and Pure Guava
· Les Baxter The Exotic Moods of Les Baxter
· Serge Gainsbourg
· Tod Dockstader 'Luna Park'
Drexciya are from Detriot, part of Underground Resistance- I
really like them. Return of the DJ's is music from
California- it's avant-garde hip-hop, taking it to another
extreme with a lot of excessive scrathing and cutting up.
Batucada are from South America with really, really fast
rhythms with screaming and shouting with no songs. Best of
Acid 1 is old school from '88 with all of these Chicago
producers and acid tunes. I love Ween- I really, really
like them and everything they do. I'm well into Les Baxter-
a right weirdo. I have this double CD by Gainsbough that I
like a lot with 'Lemon Incest' on it. I've got CD's by Nurse
With Wounds and Harry Partch with me but I haven't
listened"
