I read an interview with pearl jam around the release of
their last album, Riot Act, and the drummer, Matt
Cameron, formerly of Soundgarden was talking about the
intermittent-gaps and muting effects on a song on that album
called "You Are." He said he recorded himself playing the
drums and fed it into this program. Now, with that pattern
recorded and in place, all imput would only sound in those
places where there was a drumbeat. So, when whoever played
the rhythm guitar on that track did his thing, it would only
sound in those instances in which the programs new pattern
allowed; all else was completely muted providing for a very
cool effect. What kind of program does this specific task? I
would like to use something like this .. possibly for this
Autechre contest.

you could do it in supercollider quite simply with an
amplitude follower and a threshhold level. you could also do
it in realtime like this. I reckon it would take about a
dozen lines of code.

Well... I just started using Logic. in Logic, it's possible
to place a gate or a compressor on the main output channel
and link it to the drum channel, using the useful feature
called sidechaining. you just place the gate on the main
output and choose the drumline as its value input.

you can do it easily in fruity loops using the peak
controller.

if youve got fruity, there is a tutorial included that shows
you how to work it.
