can you feel it in your hand? is it better sound quality?
(err...) or is it some kind of this 'back to childhood'
retro bollocks i seem to have an obsession with?

i vote no. 3 prolly, err... you reckon ... err.... what?

you know the WHOLE crazy thing about vinyl is ......didn't
they like stop making RECORD players ages ago....and if you
wanna BUY one today it's gonna cost you your first born.

i mean i don't care how RICH the sound is supposed to be,
CD's are so much more accessable and easy to play....i have
vinyl thats never seen a record player NEEDLE.....prolly
never will.....so it's gathering dust. a frisbee is about
all it's good for ( i do like the weight of it tho, maybe i
can use it for dishes =0))

depends on how it will be used. Of course some people just
buy everything on vinyl for the fact that its VINYL, oh
God!
Though if you have the right equipment it does sound better
than cd. Cds can sound sort of flat in the frequency ranges.
Thats why many Dj's use them, you get a better frequency
response while using the mixer. theres lots of reasons.
Since I am neither a DJ or care if my discs are
aesthetically pleasing, i use cd's, which are probably more
practical for me given the way I listen to music.

Yeah its psychodelic! You put the little needle down and it
plays your album. Then you see Jimi Hendrix jumps out of the
pitch controll and gogo dancers carry you into a cloud of
purple haze.

shit.

ooh what a great metaphor. just off to my creative writing

Vinyl not only have better frequency response, but the
digital discretization actually throws away information.
They are actually closer to the original sound. That being
said, reproduction of sound from dragging a needle across a
piece of vinyl is very tricky to do accurately. If you want
high quality, you need very nice equipment, and it's hard to
keep your records in mint shape. Some people like the warm
sound of records... I don't like the hissing, but I buy
records of stuff that's vinyl only like Gescom and some
other stuff.

I own a few AFX vinyl's, but only because they don't come on
cd. I also was donated a nice $300 turntable from the early
70's. It sounds quite impressive. If I listen to AB3 on cd
and the listen to the same tracks on the AB 3.1 vinyl, the
vinyl tracks actually do sounds a very noticable bit better.
The frequencies you can here are amazing. When hearing one
right after the other it is very obvious there is a
difference in quality, but I still prefer cd's.

I do use CDs, especially to sleep to (imagines needle
cutting through run out groove after being let run all
night) or when you have friends over- it's nice to be able
to set a CD to loop if it's just being used as background
music.
CDs are very portable and are typically cheaper. You can
also burn your own CDs cheaply which is another plus point.

Vinyl is great for "active listening", the fact you have to
get up and turn it over/change disc all the time stops you
from doing much else, so the music doesn't just become
background noise.

I like it for DJing as Cueing is a lot easier (I know new CD
players with jog wheels are improving, but I still prefer to
do it the old fashioned way).

The weight of vinyl is a real pain though :/

vinyl has a bit of soul to it.
its also easier to control when DJing.
its proper hands on without as many buttons as CD's.

Yes, I forgot to mention scratching too!
I've never seen a CD equivalent that accurately emulates
scratching (I know there's the final scratch, but that is
vinyl based IMO).

Dont know if you can get in UK, but here in Japan you can
buy these crazy cd mixing decks, with a wheel that you turn
to jog and scratch and do everything you can do with vinyl.
Maybe that is final scratch.. I dont know what they are
called, but they are very cool and I want one.

ive got to admit tho. if money was no object, then i'd
definetely get final scratch.
it would save ya a ton of money in the end.
you could just blag your friends records for a week, record
them all into your laptop, and enjoy them for life!

I've heard that there is some noticable lag when scribbling
and the records wear out too quickly. I'd still like to use
one first before righting it off completely as, like you
say, you'd save loads of money, as well as being able to use
CD/mp3 only tracks.

TokyJo: I've had a go on one CD deck with a jog wheel and it
doesn't feel as natural as scratching vinyl for me. Maybe if
I spent a bit longer on one I'd get used to it.

no, i've seen and used it.
its absolutely amazing.
fairplay, you might have to change your final scratch vinyl
every so often because you are cueing up from the same
point, but thats a fair price to pay.
as i said, i've used it and it crazy that you can mix your
own edits of tracks you have. stunning piece of kit

Try playing audiophile copies of old Rolling
Stones/Beatles/Hendrix albums on 12" through a top of the
range hi-fi compared to the CD...

I admit electronic music doesn't sound quite so different
though.

Still, even if it was mastered from DAT, that's till over
twice the sampling rate of CDs.

Last time I checked, twice 44100 = 88200, so it is over
twice as frequently sampled as CDs (provided 96khz dat is
used).

Or are you saying it's mainly 48000hz DAt that is usually
used?

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that yes

hmm I've got an interesting question

WHAT IS THE PHYSICALLY ACHIEVED "SAMPLERATE" OF VINYL?

I thought this had been discussed enough already.

Shannon's sampling theorem states that for a signal to be
uniquely reconstructed it must be sampled at a rate twice
that of the highest frequency in the signal. Since our
crappy ears can only hear between 20Hz and 20kHz a sampling
rate of 44.1kHz (more than double the highest frequency the
human ear can perceive) is more than adequate.

I don't buy into the audiophile argument of being able to
"feel" the frequencies that are removed from the original
recording. The only difference in listening to a vinyl
recording is the "warmth" you get from the low-end
frequencies being boosted and the surface noise.

He he, quite a few of us can hear above 20khz mate :)

All depends on how short your ear hairs are...

Not to write of your POV, but have you ever listened to an
audiophile 12" (of a recording with "real instruments" on
it) on a top of the range hi-fi with the CD playing in synch
and cutting between the two on the amp?

Oh and I write off a lot of audiophile arguments too. You
know, the stuff about obscenely expensive cables (okay,
paired cabling makes a difference and gold connectors reduce
crackle, but do you really need £400 cable? :) )

Vinyl sucks. You know what I do? I hire the musicians and
get them to play in my living room. The sound quality is
superb and hardly ever jumps.

No, I've not tried that experiment. But I'm not discounting
differences either. Of course the two recordings will sound
different but the signal generated from the record will not
have any more audible information than that generated by the
CD.

I'm pretty sure that in experiments no human being has been
able to hear any tones above 20-21kHz. And most people can't
even hear that high (typically 18kHz), a threshold which
decreases with age I might add.

I'd like to agree with whoever it was on the board that said
that the format of the music is the last of your worries. If
you are a true audiophile you should be worried not only
about expensive interconnects (as you mentioned) but also
about the acoustic layout of your furniture, fabric of your
carpet, whether your ceiling is artexed, whether it's a
Tuesday etc, etc.

CDs, records.... it all sounds the same to me, but then my
ear hairs are five inches long and I live in a cardboard box
with a rat named Simon.
