...and of course you want them to show our world. you have
to choose some music record, to show them. what would it be
?

i'd choose some kraftwerk.

(greetings to aminal, the inventor of this thread !)

i'd stick them some weed and tell them "now here's some BoC,
Ae and Aphex Twin...you go over there and listen to those
records while i test-fly that spaceship of yours"

Some So Solid Crew so they'd think we were all stupid and
harmless and wouldn't start an intergalactic war.

OMG 5.1
*makes a mess on wall

Man if aliens came to me, first I'd freek out. Then after I
calmed down, I'd have to play them the whole spectrum of
music. Its not fair to represent earth unless you play alot
of diverse music.

id play the "hurt" cover by johnny cash, then all of afx,
ae, and kraftwerk. then some nin, radiohead, tool, apc,
system of a down, and then end on some beethoven or vivaldi
classics.

5.1 so it sounds like you're listening from the middle of
the band playing ;)

Let me know if that's any good... I've yet to try SACDs.

The White Album... they'd touch all the bases right there...
folk, metal, grunge, musique concrete, pop rock,
pyschedelic, blues, lullaby, orchestral pop, ballads,
medieval, hard rock, political, non-sensical, love, hate,
sing-alongs, country and western, parodies, jazz, piano pop,
pastoral, reggae, classical, showtunes, etc. Boom, right
there the aliens have heard every style, barring hip hop.

I'd play some of my tracks and tell them that it's
megaclassic of Earth and that I am the ruler and we are a
powerful race and then lure the naive aliens into a trap to
capture and sexually exploit them.

i'd be honest with them and show them mozart or beethoven.

Silent Hill OST.

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2003-03-20 14:23 [#00606384]

you said choose some music, not choose everything. if i had
to pick something representitive of music on earth it'd be
beethoven or mozart cos they fathered music as we know it.
sure, they weren't "the first musicians" or even the first
notable composers, but they've impacted music more than
anyone mentioned above. just cos i like coil or radiohead or
whatever doesn't mean it represents music at large.

day,aliens,the thing or something ...... ;-)

But if i did play some music for them,I`d play a wide
range, but obviously the albums i like would be first
........wonder what they`d think of vsnares.....

Strawberry Fields was hiphop.. That wasn't on The White
Album though was it? Maybe it was an alternate mix.

borrowing from previously existing compositions, such as the
horn solo in "penny lane" (bach, i believe) and some
beethoven and mozart here and there, to develop a new piece
is hip-hop. sampling (i am the walrus, a day in the life) is
hip-hop.

then we have the breakbeats in "tomorrow never knows", the
trip-hop style in "because"...

not the sample based beat oriented trip-hop of today, of
course.. just the sublime feel to it (eg: the guitar's
hypnotic effect), the way the instruments and voices
interact, and its somewhat suspended time... a lot more
psychedelic than trip-hop as we know it, but still somewhat
correlative.
