I wish I could help you.
I make music using software only (except for a Yamaha
SY77)...

Just a warning: I'm not a hardware buff and don't claim to
be- I mainly research h/w to better understand the software
equivalents which I use.

The 303 is fortunately one of the instruments I've studied
in depth :)

I think most people would agree that it is fair to say, the
303 has an artificially high price (for what it does) due to
its collectability. As I said in the other thread- they
weren't thought of as that good till DJ Pierre and co. got
twiddling, so not that many were made. This (comparative)
rareness and the fact that it is such a clasic synth due to
its part in acid music means that a lot of musicians like
them for collectors pieces perhaps even more than their
sounds. The fact it's often professional musicians bidding
on them drives up the price higher...

Unless you really are a "collector" I'd advise that your
money would be better spent on a different synth- lots of
more recent synths emulate the sounds of the 303 (as it's so
popular) the way a lot of drum machines emulate the 808's
trademark sounds.

My advise would be to DL the RE-birth demo for your PC. Have
a play and see if that's really what you want. You may
decide a copy of re-birth is all you want.

I'm not up on "modern" synths so if anyone wants to
recommend a good current synth that emulates the 303 as part
of its repetoire, please fire away.

If you do just want the 303 sound, maybe you should consider
something like the MB 33 made by MAM - very similair sounds,
but only 1/4 of the price.
