anyone else listen to dancehall? easily the most exciting and fun music to become popular in the U.S. in a long while. tune in to a dancehall radio show if you get the chance, you won't be sorry!

it's like a cross between hip-hop and reggae.. basically very sordid reggae singing over programmed beats (sometimes they jack instrumentals from hip-hop songs). the most famous dancehall artists right now are supercat (a veteran artist you might remember for his guest spot in sugar ray's hit "fly"; the neptunes are working with him right now for what will be a huge american album for him), sean paul ("just gimme the light", "make it clap" remix w/ busta), and beenie man. the premise isn't TOO dissimilar from dub.

somewhat... but very thick jamaican accents singing in english but you'd never be able to tell. the songs are mostly about sex though (smart lyrics not being important to the genre) and the programming is a lot faster than anything on blue lines.

Dancehall is a massive influence to me. From the age of 13 or so I used to listen to pirate radio stations that played dancehall. The 'Steppas' used to really rock it! there was one time when warp almost signed Iration Steppas. dub style dance hall electro, they should have...

sex sex sex baby ;) but why just talk about it...
*ahem*
yea jivver that would've been interesting... do you think it was a mistake for warp to sort of pigeonhole themselves into a limited range of music early on? the opposite of that is so many people are giving warp shit now for getting into hip-hop.
personally i'm still getting into dancehall... i've known buju banton and beenie man since the mid to late 90s now but it wasn't really until that sean paul song ("gimme the light") hit big that i realized how cool this music is...

Dancehall has pioneered raw electronics, rap for nearly 30 years. I really think warp slipped up pigeoning themselves into purely an AI/IDM/pseudo hip hop label.
Master of cermonies used to 'rap' over drum machines/breaks in a really raw style, emotions that they felt now (then), a lot of the 'backpacker' hip hop or whatever it's called now, seems to be a bit too contrived to me.

you cant' not move your ass to ragga beats. and the vocals can be insane. crazy atonal melodies sung super fast and rhythmically.

sure a lot of it's contrived... that goes with the territory of these self-important genre styles (eg: "intelligent" dance music... of course with that attitude some of it's gonna be pretentious). on the other hand, some of the leading "backpackers" actually reject the whole culture... like Common when he raps about taking a skateboard out of a backpacker's hands and slapping him around with it, or talib kweli when he raps "it ain't commercial or underground, it's true.." (true school; also see, j-live... now there is a consummate and LIKEABLE conscious rapper), or mos def when he says in articles he isn't some kind of activist, just a lyricist. the whole backpacker thing is mostly the underground media's fault...

yea i listened to some enduser a couple weeks ago... shit is crazy!! as far as breakcore or whatever i think he's better than vsnares, but vsnares has other qualities that i like.
dancehall is really appealing to me lately cos i'm starting to get sick of the monotone that is inherent to rapping... it's hard to get around really, no matter how much i like the emcee it can sometimes be too much. dancehall is cool cos their voices are so melodic and lively, not dead sounding.

yeah I love it when people who aren't singers sing anyway and it comes out so lovely and natural, like clouddead or lots of ragga/dancehall. amateurish but weirdly beautiful and childlike.

50 cent rocks 'cos he feels it, not trying to mesmarize people with hard to follow lyrics, just nice club fun hip hop

it's funny to see who's into 50 cent.. i saw latoya jackson on larry king live answer "50 cent" to larry's question who her favorite singer is right now... and trent reznor (your arch nemesis for some reason?!) is into him too.. i'm not quite sure what it is about 50 that's so likeable but he's definitely great
