hip hop seems to be more about the instrumentation, IMO.

that makes no sense at all and i do hope you're kidding. tolstoyed is right.
hiphop is the lifestyle/culture which is based on 4 elements, being:
- rap/mc-ing - dj-ing - breakdance - graffiti

the difference between hip hop and rap is.. hip hop is the genre, or culture rather, and 'rap' is the vocal style which is most used in the genre.. of course you can have hip hop without rap, hip hop isnt just limited to music, it encompasses graffiti art and breakdancing as well
some people seem to think that they are two separate things..that 'rap' is the commercial version of hip hop or something.. which isnt true.. yes, commercial hip hop usually has rapping, because instrumental hip hop isnt really made for the pop market

exactly. hip-hop is a way of life inclusive of "rap music," rapping is a vocal style.

rap means 'talk', i.e. the vocal part of a track.
hip-hop means stolen drumloop conjuring a rundown area of new york. or something.

hip-hop contains graffiti, breakdance, rap, dj-ing, lifestyle.. [map]
eurodance contains rap, dj-ing, lifestyle, and some girl singing after the MCs tired.
I've heard there are some beats to, but I think they're boring and can be ignored, just like in most cases of hiphop.

wow this thread is so informative by now. it just helps so much when people repeat things that were said already a few dozen times.
people are so eager to make it obvious that they know stuff so they reply without looking at the rest of the thread.
