What do you people think about repetition in songs? Is it okay if there is, say, a beat that stays the same throughout, as long as its a good song? Opinions please.

I think that, done right, repetition can really put you into a 'trance' state. Depends on the effect you're after I guess.

Boards of Canada do it. My new song sounds like them, but not too similar.

I really can't stand an over-repetition in music. Thats personal. Now that I think of it... I can't stand songs that are over 6 minutes long (but that is just recent. I used to love those 20 minute long songs that never changed).
Actually it depends on what kind of sounds are used. I find that songs with a really soft feel to them do well with a lot of repetition. Its just when a track has a really fast, sharp feel that get tiring when they are too long.

I guess non repetitiveness is a good way to judge accurately whether something sounds good to me. But I also like symmetry in art, and for that you need repetition, by definition. I think complexity is usually a defining characteristic I like, but the definition of that is just something that's hard to understand (due to too many involved parts for example) The best stuff is complex but composed with symmetry, in some logical form.

Repetition is stable in nature, things happen in patterns that are repeated... the water->clouds->rain pattern, the orbiting planets, the pattern of locomotion in animals walking, day & night, the same for music.

parts of books i forgot the name of: the sphere is the most symmetrical object-no corners, the most capacious. all bodies tend to assume that form. this can be noticed in water droplets. beyond the seeming chaos of stars are quite symmetrical spiral structures of galaxies. there's many kinds of symmetry (not just mirror). definition:any object that can be changed to resemble that same object. "tyger!tyger! burning bright, the the forests of the night. What immortal hand or eye, dare frame thy fearful symmetry?" symmetry is also in phenomena like seasons. life takes on its own rhythms to match the rhythms of the environment. A characteristic of every rhythm is its frequency; cycles per second, day, year, or millenium. the breeding and migration of birds and the growth cycle of trees occur in synchrony with the cycle of the repeating seasons. rhythm= regular repetition *hiccup* in time. cycle=chain of events that occur in a set order (not necessarily evenly spaced in time). rhythms occur within rhythms. extreme specialization does not lend itself to analog thinking. the great scientists maintain broad interests in many fields.frequency=waves persecond. sound; infrasonic, sonic, ultrasonic, light, radio, infared, visible, ultraviolet, x ray, gamma ray. radio is the longest in wavelengths, gamma is shortest. sound is compressional waves when you strike a drum it travels in all directions as spheres having a common center of the drum. refraction= when waves leave one medium and enter another their direction of travel is deflected. if you swing a pendulum with a pencil on the end and move paper underneath it at a constant speed, you convert time into distance so it's easier to study. when 2 waves don't precisly coincide in time, they're said to be "out of phase".
A man sinks into a bog with only his hair unsubmerged. He can't pull himself out by his own hair because it acts on his hand with a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. *hiccup* A perception is illusionary when it violates logical requirements for what can be fact. Have you witnessed the selfish behavior of penguins standing at the waters edge, scared to go in because a seal might be under the water, so they push eachother in as guini pigs? All highs are techniques of focusing awareness, of shaking us out of habitual modes of perception and getting us to concentrate on something, whether a sound, sight, or unusual sensation. In normal states of mind our conscious energies are scattered. our attention wanders aimlessly. the caterpillar crawls by shortening and lengthening the abdominal segments in a wavelike fashion, beginning with the last segment, compressing and pushing forward using it's muscles. *yawn*

I expect "IDM" to be non-repetative ..ever since I heard the Otto Von Schirach album. To me, that album sounds like he is VERY focused on being non-repetative, and use as many samples as possible. Like, "if you use the same snare-drum-sample for more than 2 secs, then it's waaaay too repetative"..

i think a mix between repetition and non repetition is good...like maybe having a repetitious element in a song mixed with a non- repetitious element..squarepusher does this a lot.
or maybe progressive repetition, where the song is built on loops that evolve over time...like autechre or some of underworld's stuff
or there are some songs that are built up of several repetitious segments...this seems to be how most pop oriented music is composed...a good example would be flim, theres like 3 major segments of that song, but the 3 segments are basically loops.
like neo hippeh said...all music needs at least some repetition...or else it would just be noise. (not that theres anything wrong with noise)
i think its kinda weird that some really repetitious songs work better than others, like sometimes it can make music really boring but other times it doesnt... for example, saw2 and plastikman's music are both almost completely based on repetition...but they never really become boring or grating..
someone mentioned boards of canada...theyre a good example of how it works sometimes and others it doesnt..
songs like a beautiful place out in the country and turqoise hexagon sun are both really repetitive but (for me) they never really become boring, while songs like amo bishop rodin just lose my attention and even become a bit grating.
i also have the same problem with ae's chiastic slide, and some of the tracks on tri rep, they just loop on for what seems like forever and lose my attention....kinda like what this post is doing...

It all depends what's repeating. BOC get a mood going with spurts of one time things....with repitition, non brash elements come to the forefront so get pissed and listen to it on repeat, that'll help your objectivity...

Justin Shizz was real, I swear to god. My music? Shit? The only negative feedback I've received is from reflex and... you. People say they like my stuff, yeah they're not gonna put it on CD and take it around with them, but they're judging it. I'm going to listen to the vast majority who say it's good, not a couple of people critisising it who may just be the same person.
Now, instead of saying shit all the time, why not do a normal healthy thing and critisize me properly, why is it shit? Come on!

Healthy criticism, you want to know why it's shit? Well, it's nothing, it's bland, it's nothing I haven't heard before, it's unoriginal, that's it, it seems like you've only spent 20 minutes on it so I wonder how much "constructive criticism" I can put into it. It's just that you're a dick and you made up a fan, why? Justin Shizz, there was no need for you to do that, and you also claimed Reflex sent you child porn but then someone said something about you better log off now you started all apologising like a bitch. It was funny, but not as funny as someone making up a "fan" thats says "you're the best."
