Suppose I would try to tape a live show with my Sony MZ N1-
MD Recorder. What tips would you give me?
*What mic
*Where to stand
*Smuggling tips
*Anything else you can think of

lots of venues have different sound depending on where you
stand

probably in the middle or so of the arena or floor, not on
either side (left or right)

small recorder, put it in your pants region, near crotch,
may have to walk funny getting in the doors or tape it to
your leg, if found it may not be yours anymore :0[

tell the peeps around you not to talk just clap at the
appropriate times :0]

WHAT SHOWS YA GOING TO ?

good luck

Hiding- gaffer tape it to the inside of the top of your leg.
Make sure you know where the buttons are by touch- otherwise
you'll look like you're having a fiddle when trying to turn
it on.

Get a female mate to do it- they're not so keen to search
girls as most venues lack female bouncers.

on-line.

if you use a minidisc, just bring it in like you just
listened to some tracks but when the show starts put your
headphone plug in the mic-jack of your md and use yer
headphones as a stereo-mic.

do you have a stereo hi-fi microphone?

most are small enough to be taped on your leg and what
not... but for recording the show.. you'd prolly have to
have the mic out and about... you NEED a stereo
microphone... otherwise it'd be mono... and that would just
be crap! ah!

like recycle... what show?

I've recorded with a MD once, with an expensive stereo mic
that could be set to either 90 or 120 degrees "view". Turned
out well. Perhaps tape the mic to you wrist and pull your
shirt up and lean against something.

Well, any show I'd visit without running any risk of losing
my MD recorder of course, but I was thinking of
this one...
Not that many shows in and around Holland you know :-(

dat tapes are the same size as normal tapes, and im sure
there are portable versions around. they would be damn
expensive though.

the big vhs style dat tape is called ADAT and is used for
multitracking. 8 channels per tape.

nah... DAT tapes are SMALLER than cassette tapes!

"ADAT" tapes mostly by Akai are a different kind of thingy
but the same size as VHS tapes!

To me it's not only the quality that matters.
I've been to the WARP lighthouse party and wass quite
impressed by the BoC life performance. The way they perform
their songs sometimes quite different from how they appear
on their albums.

(had a somewhat disappointing experience with funkstorung
when we saw them at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. We went up to
the balcony and could see them playing MP3 tracks and
fiddling a bit with a synth, but that was all they did)

Some artists tend to go the extra length to impress people
with their songs at life performances and since I don't live
near London or any other place where good music kicks the
shit out of everyone i DO like to hear livesets from around
the world.

best choice?

I don't know the specfics of DATrecorders but things like
length always come up.
I don't know hum much you can squeeze onto a DAT tape but I
really like my MZ N1 MD Recorder (NO I'm not sponsored by
sony!) and the fact that you can fit your MP3's on there.
Its small and pretty extremeshockproof. Pretty powerful
machine. I don't know if you need extra utilities to manage
DATrecordings.

And prizes do matter I think.

For how much do these things change owner?

i have no idea

which one is better for recording sound samples?
i have no idea about this things, but im getting dat or md
recorder...

DAT is without compression, but it?s magnetic tape and tape
sux... An MD is almost undestroyable and can be
erased/recorded on for one million times... For longer (lo
quality) recordings MD longplay is great (5 hours stereo!)
Get yourself a md, even the pro uses them nowadays...

target="3">Give your headphones more

target="4">In-ear microphones (?)
T Style Stereo Mike for MiniDisc (.99 DIY)
Another mic (very small)

I got the T-style sony mic, it?s ok - but you have to get a
longer cord for - it hasn?t got any - cause if you are
recording some low sounds you will get the md
mechanism-sound recorded too, not that good. I?ve recorded a
lot of concerts with mine and transfered it to cd afterwards
with great result.

The "in-ear" mics are something special - gives SUPERIOR 3D
stereo - a really amazing experience. (Those are in line to
be bought by me) Don?t know if it will make sense on a
concert, though - best suited for environments and such, I
guess...

Fucks sake.
Just walk in with the headphones on your head, i've done
that so many times and bootlegged loads of gigs.
They wont take it off you if they think youre just listening
to tunes..
Next month's bootlegging hitlist....
kid koala, death in vegas, plaid, chris clark, team doyobi,
meam, the white stripes, four tet, boom bip, buck 65.
woop-woop!

I'd be interested in hearing the kid koala and DIV ones :)

They also can't "confiscate" anything, they can only chuck
you out if you get caught :) I'm not sure of the legality of
them making you wipe your recordings, but I imagine they'd
need some sort of court order to do it. A bouncer snatching
your MD and snapping the disk in it is definately not
allowed.

The T-style mic was 80 euros... (now you can get it for
maybe 65... But the in ear ones - without the pre-amp is 80
here - I would get that one instead)
