I wonder if all of us here are afflicted with this problem;
you're listening to some wierdo music on your walkman, for
me, for example, today it was Go Plastic. Someone says
something to you, but you can't hear it. You pause the track
and listen, hoping and praying that they dont ask the
dreaded question. But you know they are going to... "What
are you listening too?". You're too proud to lie and say
something else, and you could get caught out. You don't want
to generalise and risk calling Squarepusher drum&bass or
some other such sin. You have to try and explain it, and you
know they are going to have to hear a bit.

What do you do in this situation? Today's choice was to skip
through to Go!Spastic, about 1 min 50 into the track which
is the really strange warped explosion and then the track
goes literally spastic, and then let her have a listen.
She'll never bother me again.

nice avatar :)

instead of saying what it is, i go to the most listenable
track on the cd, play it for them, and when they like it,
they'll say "whoa what is this?!" and i tell them.
gets more people into it that way

hahah - if someone asks me i just go to the most
disturbing/wierdest song i have on the cd and let them have
a listen - that gives me one of two different reactions:

"holy crap, that is awesome!"

OR

"do you actually listen to that crap?"

If they ask, I just give them my headphones.
No matter what song is playing.

They usually go "You are wacko" or something like that, but
hey, who cares?

And, indeed, you have a very nice avatar!

like, if I say "boards of canada", they go like "boards of
w00t?" I give'em the headphones and they just look at me
with a stupid grin on their face; like, doh, dontcha listen
to avril lavigne and aqua..

no wonder I'm a loner, huh

"techno" or "weird techno music." neither one is a lie and
they're both very easy to understand. what's the big deal?
it's not like i'm listening to morse code.

imo, that is because of the general opinion on idm
music-most of the people are under the impression, rdj (and
others) makes some weird and fucked up tunes and they dont
even bother to really listen to it
i mean (it happened to me), the other day i played some easy
stuff by rdj and there were reactions "this is rdj?"...

On my walkman I tend to listen to more 4 to the floor
techno, or my own music.
When people ask me what I have on my headphaunz, I let em
listen.

Reaction:
1. Techno: Its very monotone. isnt it?
2. My own music: "What is this? Must be made by a schizo" -
"Thanks" and then they look at me like I'm insane.

So...
Life is hard when you have your own taste of music. Isn't it
my friends?

Ow and anus.... I missed you ;)
I'll bring a bottle of wine tonight...

the people i hang around with generally don't ask me, cos
they all "know" the music i like is "weird" and don't like
it as a rule. they are all into house. so i wait until about
8am after a heavy session and whack a bit of ulrich schnauss
on. then they seem to love it, especially after a big line
of evil ketamine.

i usually don't listen to my music in the outside world.
for this reason, but mostly because the noises of people,
cars, trains, etc. cover the subtleties... irritating.

Doing a song out of distorted morse code sounds like an
interesting idea.

The last time someone asked me what I was listening to was
like 2 or 3 years ago... Kid A. I let them listen and they
said it was ''suicide music''.

Yay for open minds!

i'd like someone to provide some solid evidence that
listening to idm is synonymous with having good taste in
music (or that not listening ot idm is synonymous with
having no or poor taste in music).
