I wonder how many naked paedophiles were watching THIS
lovely show last night on channel 4? They would have had a
field day!

Alas I was watching it with my little brother and his
girlfriend, so I had to limit myself to making nasty
comments :P

While the boys trashed the fuckin place, the girls bitched.

I saw shards of Lord of the Flies in both.

Boys Alone was utter carnage. You should have seen the
expression on the parents' faces when they came to pick
them up. Michael in particular was a little psychotic. He
didn't say much, just wantonly destroyed other people's
property.

They put a group of 10 and 11 year old girls into a house
for a week and left them to their own devices.

They already did it before with boys, and there was no
public outcry.

Hmmm, something seriously wrong with parents that let their
kids participate in something like that...

made me sick too.
Lord of the flies is a quality film but this takes the
piss.

Reality TV is a Psychologists dream. Ethics are completly
thrown out of the window to allow us to study human
behaviour in controled circumstances.

great horror films are made of this.

(brrrr...) :$

i thought this was done more as a psychology experiment,
rather than a reality tv show.

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2003-03-05 08:57 [#00581520]

How could it work well as an exercise in real psychology
since there were people in there with video-cameras,
following them about. What's that saying about as soon as
you look at something you're affecting it?

Basic premise of quantum activity isn't it? An event that
changes through the very act of being monitored/recorded?

nubile nymphs!?!?!

Yep, that's why if ever psychiatry students include me in a
covert poll (ie do something then tell you after your
reaction it was for a study) I will take their clipboard off
them and destroy all the results on it.

My ex was at a turtle conservation project in Greece and a
young married couple appeared. Throughout their time there
they argued, flirted with other people and did very little
conservation work. They left a comment in the guestbook just
before they left (no one saw it till they had gone) that
they were two final year sociology students doing a study of
people's reactions to married couples. Frankly, I think
that's a disgrace...

well, if the end justifies the means...

read up about Lord Humphrey's "Tea-room trade" study in
1970.

those people should be observed themselves in horrible way

eg. what would you do if a guy came and stole your clothes
and the whole world laughed at you

or something real nice like that

Yeah both programs were interesting. I only saw the one with
the boys and saw it again recently when it was repeated.

Its just basically sensationalism. The whole scenario kind
of reminds of Lord of the Flies. The poor little bastards
didn't know what they were letting themselves in for.

I must say I found it extremely depressing to watch. But in
a way I'm not surprised, most of them were basically rough
kids so you could hardly expect sophistication. I personally
think this kind of TV is the worst kind of TV because the
occupants really are stupid and have no idea what they're
letting themselves in for. Its similar to shows like
Popstars and Model Behaviour where they like to send up the
most God aweful contestents. People (Joe Public) can be just
so innoncent and green sometimes; still its funny to watch
but equally I do feel its very exploitative. I personally
feel acting like a clown on TV or even being on TV is just
so naff that the kind of people (from the public) on it
mostly tend to be prime idiots and as such are the sort of
people who are unable to exercise better judgement.

But only the observers decide that- of course to them
the ends justifies the means- they get a degree out of it.
The subjects on the other hand feel abused and cheated and
gain no benefits from it...
