I've known for a long time that as far as popular music is
concerned (and for that matter underground and trail-blazing
music) europe esp. the UK is like 30 times cooler than
anything american.. there's no contesting that.. but what is
the popular music climate like out there? what kind of
scenes are prevalent in the popular music industry.. and
what kind of scenes are popular w/ "the kids" .. without
seeing much chart presence (sort of like hip-hop was/is in
the US).. I'm trying to figure out if like DnB is the UK
equivalent to hip-hop over here.. even though there is a
building hip-hop scene in the UK (floetry, ms. dynamite
etc).. anyway, let me know what's going on over there

UK is 1029 times cooler than US.

Well, pretty much anything is 1029 times cooler than US.

"trail-blazing experimental music"

It's ugly in the charts, that's all I can say.

UK hiphop sucks theo, always has too. Stick to the US
underground hiphop would be the advice here. Don't know if
the UK is THAT much cooler really, if I look in my music
collection i see it's a 50/50 deal. Alot of great music has
come from the USA, it's just that it gets slagged off in
here once it gets more than 100 fans.

If we're talking about the stuff that's making it in the
charts, it tends to be pretty anodine girl or boy bands,
often manufactured by TV shows.

Also, there's an increasing RnB and hip-hop influence.
Thinking about it, a lot of what's in the charts here is
American RnB/hip-hop acts.

If you're pretty enough to be on the cover of a magazine
bought by 12 year-olds you'll probably do well in the charts
here.

i'm just glad i dont live in the middle of europe. some of
their pop music is absolutely disgusting.
i think us and uk pop culture is getting very similar, as
there are more people in the uk buying up all this r'n'b
piss.
i dont think bands like oasis and stuff are as big in the
usa as they are over here

i can think of other words other than *cooler* to describe
the popular music industry here...

can't remember the last decent song in the charts, may have
been that Tori Amos song, did that chart here?

course

no I'm not saying the uk hiphop was any good.. or could come
close to fucking w/ that of nyc.. I was just trying to
equate the underground hiphop scence in the US to the dnb
scene in the UK.. despite the growing presence of hiphop
over there

x-tomatic I noticed ur post about 4th disciple.. he's
probably my 2nd favorite producer.. there's no way he'll
ever get his due credit/respect but he definately deserves
it (nasty immigrants/soldiers of darknes!?!?)

believe me anything is cooler/better than avril levine, good
charlotte all the poppy punk bullshit, b2k etc

I'm with you Theo, 4th disciple is just way ahead of the
game, which is prolly why he ain't getting credit where
credit is due. I must say there hasn't been a single track
of 4th that has lost it's original power to me, from sunz of
man's five arch angels/ soldiers of darkness right down to
killarmy's ultraviolent "the hit".

donovan beats dylan hands down. does that have any
relevance?

Ha ha ha! Donovan was soooo poor compared to Dylan. I can't
believe how anyone could think that. I mean, taste counts
for a lot, but that's a bit like saying Wolfenstein is
better than Q3 IMO...

I'm unashamed in saying that I do enjoy some chart music.
There's times when listening to my usual music just becomes
a bit too heavy and I want to tune out with something
ridiculously poptastic like tATu, Britney, Christina or
whatever.

HEY!

UK hip-hop is amazing! Trust me, if you look hard enough,
people like jest and loads others are giving the guys over
the atlantic a run for thier money.

true danbrusca .. believe me my mp3 collection requires a
lot of explaining (and chagrin)

"the hit" - I know what you're talking about , although w/
that track in particular I felt killarmy was almost too
sloppy with it and it almost ruined it for me.. really nice
production from 4th though. I think one satellite release in
the wu-tang cadre that really stands out as being like no
other (even w/in wu-tang and underground hiphop) is the
largely 4th disciple-produced Heavy Mental by killah priest
.. his production transcended the wu-style he was rooted in
and completely blew my mind w/ that one ("atoms to adam"
"crusaids" etc) ... also true master is someone I formerly
underrated out of a disappointing limited rza presence he
filled quite nicely.. it's like all the wu-tang producers
all based their styles on the same philosophy, yet they each
displayed an untouchable uniqueness that makes most of the
production that passes as quality these days look like
childs play to understate.

theo, what may seem sloppy, is actually a deliberate type of
flow by killarmy. Maybe it only strikes me as brilliant
tho.
I gotta say that their style and lyrics are like the only
ones that penetrate deep into my subconsciousness. I'm
certain it has to do with their style and content, but
anyway we're strolling way o/t here :p. Glad to hear that
there's more ppl who respect that 4th disciple shit tho.

I know what u mean .. concerning the rawness of their rhyme
style..

what I like about 4th is that each project has it's own
feel.. dirty weaponry, heavy mental and silent weapons for
quiet wars are by no means cut from the same cloth

actually.. they all do maintain a similar feel.. it's the
type of sound that's different.. clean/sharp vs.
dirty/broken

wolfenstein IS better than q3, but dylans voice is the worse
than ainsley from pop tossers and donovans songwriting is
FAR superior :)

as a way of bridging the gap between the conversation I'm
having exclusively w/ x-tomatic and the initial reason for
creating this thread.. I will say that I forgot that some of
the most interesting underground hip-hop has come from
europe in recent years. that is mainly because it draws on a
very creative artistic force in the hiphop world.. that
being the wu-tang of 93-97 (<-- the year the 'forever' tour
brought rza/wu-tang to the world's attention and lead to
collab. with bjork and bono) anyway.. I liked I'Am a lot and
a few others.. all of whihc are to appear on "W.A.R.: The
World According to RZA" has anyone heard about this? each
track will feature talent from different european, asian
countries and some from america.. should be very interesting

hey.. "atlantis" is a great , albeit repetitive song (esp.
when it served as the backing score to a brutal
beating-to-death in goodfellas)

dnb is starting to become mainstream in the uk in a watered
down shyfx/t power sort of way. pop charts suck more than i
can describe. idm scene is buzzing!

how mainstream or close to it is idm (in the uK)? is it
played on the radio? i dont think much people really know
about idm in the US unless they stray from the mainstream
lines

On the plus side, it means that "real" dnb seems to be
getting more popular...
