If you don't mind shelling out some money for a dvd-audio
player/SACD player, you can hear plenty of multichannel
music cds. More are on the way.

i was messing around and made a track with music out of the
back and center speakers, while the left and right speakers
said "you have crappy speakers"

i read that NIN might be working on a 5.1 record

maybe it's just a rumour though

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-03-03 03:09 [#00578184]

i doubt we will see it any time soon

there not hardly enough people with 5.1 setups out there, to
constitute a label to release 5.1 cds.

Dont expect it for a good while.

(well, ok, perhaps some underground artsy person will do it,
just because they CAN... but the label will take a blow from
that CD, because its just not as likely to sell.

For example... lets say Venitian Snares did it. Well,
Venitian snares, while popular in the IDM scene... he isnt a
huge money maker in the grand scheme of things. Additionaly,
you have to figure in the odds of the number of fans of VS
who actually own 5.1 setups.

Its just not a smart buisness idea at this time. Plain and
simple.

Of course pmu could say, fuckit, we want to do it because
(insert reason here) but I can bet you anything, that they
will be taking a loss on that release.

even NIN its doubtful.

The target audience for NIN, is generally teenagers/young
adults.

How many in this age range are really goin to have a 5.1
setup?

...

its a bit of a gimmick though really isnt it?. I mean how
many people will actually have their speaker set up properly
to achieve the artists setup?

exactly

to really get the full effect, youd have to have the
speakers set up very strictly

although I do think you could add a whole new dimension...
its just not something that the general public will be
experiancing any time soon
