Despite a lot of shit pop music being produced in the 80's, there were some really good alternative bands/artists that gained a good amount of chart success and popularity. New Order, Depeche Mode, the Cure, Kate Bush are just a few...
(this isnt specific to the 80's, just using it as an example)
Since the turn of the 90's it seems like anyone being creative, original and alternative has no chance success. Off the top of my head I think Bjork is one of the few true creative artists to have success.
Do you thnk there is any chance of a balance being struck in mainstream music with creativity and manufactured pop? Why is there less success for creative artists? Do you care as long as you get to hear them?
discuss...

i dont think that "pop" has ever been good - but thats more of an age-group opinion by me - it seems that the only to a "pop" artist is by doing whatever the world has a craving for at the moment - its incredibly difficult to do your own thing and be a "popstar" at the same time - but if i had to choose - the only good "pop" was in the 70s - im talking about the rock baby - pink floyd, the who, twas pop once upon a time - and its still the music for me... even though im 15...

I'm also 15, and I think pop died around the mid-to-late 80's. Even if they were just in it for the money, up until then you COULD get a decent song top of the charts with credible lyrics, catchy tune and whatnot. Just check out the GTA Vice City soundtrack.

yeah that soundtrack has some good songs on it. If they make a soundtrack for the 00's in 10 years time, what songs would they put on it? Probably Westlife and Sugarbabes.

"pop music" = popular music, right?
it was the most popular music then, and now today it's the "most popular", becuase its what the majority of people listen to because it's easy to listen to. or i could be wrong.
maybe some just dont like pop music today just because of its "cheesy" or "simple and uninspired" nature??

By definition, pop music is not a genre. Therefore, people who like pop music through out periods of decades are not serious music listeners because the chance of them liking what is popular by coincience is exceedingly small. They like it because it is popular, and that isn't about loving music, it's about something else.
So what happened to good pop music? It stopped being popular. And certain genres are not able to function after their chart success fails, so these genres die out. For example, disco. If the majority stop enjoying disco music, it won't be popular to dance to anymore and if people don't want to dance to it then there is little motivation for making it.
Why is there less success for creative artists? It is difficult to swallow. Most people who buy records like music that is easy on the ear (and on the eye it would seem) and isn't too hard to understand. Creative music is confusing, it requires you to get involved in it and really enjoy it for what it is, or else there is nothing to gain from it. For the pop-buying market this is too much to ask. Not that people who like current pop have invalid opinions of course, as long as they don't like it because it is popular.

Man, the Beatles were freaks of nature. I think they must be the only artists of any field to be the most influential and creative AND the most popular. There truly won't ever be another like them.
That's what I'm most impressed with... I've always thought writing a truly brilliant pop song that can be enjoyed AND respected by absolutely anybody was ten thousand times harder than anything Autechre could do.

its annoying how there are no new bands to take over from artists like depeche mode, the cure etc.
some of you like coldplay but i think its unimaginative tripe, they claim to be inspired by bands like the cure and echo and the bunnymen. You would thnk that would hint at a creative element to the band but i dont hear it.
I wish a band would come out now and completely blow me away with their music... but with the bands i see on the tv and listen to on the radio i just know its not gonna happen, not any time soon anyway.

i know they are, i just mean there doesnt seem to be a next generation of really good bands to take over when they finnish. The singer from depeche mode, David Ghan (sp?) is releasing a solo album soon which should be interesting.
I think the last Cure album was one of the best they have made, so glad they didn't split up!

its the same forr me exactly. i rrealised that boy georrge was not the whole of the 80's and so i went looking and found some rreally "exiting" stuff.
i mean forr 10 - 20 yearr old music to be exiting, it must be good.

you heard of Dead Can Dance? i always thought they were a shitty dancey/gothic band but they turned out to be a awesome band similar to Coil, just a bit more classical and with ethereal singing from Lisa Gerrard (you might know her from the gladiator soundtrack).
