Ae: Draft 7.30 review

Stumbled across this earlier... thought some of you may be
interested. :)

Amazon.co.uk Review

If you thought Autechre were forever lost in the chattering
electronic static and tempo-less industrial fog that
characterised their oppressively difficult last album, Draft
7.30 should come as a very welcome return to formality.
Stripping much of the machinery away, Autechre have left
hallucinogenic keyboard washes, pumping sub-bass and
intensely complex drum patterns, all of which mutate and
interact according to some alien logic. Fans suggest that
previous album Confield was best listened to quietly in the
dead of night; well, Draft 7.30 is best listened to very
loud, through massive speakers. It's the perfect way to
appreciate the meaty low-end that palpitates through tracks
like "Surripere", the child-like chimes that creep through
the background on "Theme Of Sudden Roundabout" or the
gut-pounding rhythm of "Xylin Room" that suddenly halts for
a split-second leaving one sprawling forward on the track's
sheer momentum. Hardcore fans might dismiss this as a step
back from the brink, a mere retread of ground that's being
stamped flat by Autechre's army of copyists. But ultimately,
Draft 7.30 is a blast to listen to--a genuine rarity in
leftfield electronica nowadays. --Louis Pattison

here i got one

For all you impatient bastards who used the likes of slsk
and various other means you have probably have heard draft
7.30. If you haven't you can probably think of three people
that have. Out of those three people at least one has made
the compairison to confield. And the other one was quick
with a "How the fuck can you make that compairiaon" reply.
The truth is while there are similairities between the two
albums i think the word "similar" is as far as you can take
the compairison. Draft 7.30 is more approachable than
previous albums and tends to not be so "difficult" in
compairison to other albums. Not that this is a
groundbreakingly different approach. It's still the same old
autechre that you've learned to grow and love. The more
albums they make the better they get. You might as well add
it to your collection. I will!
-virgin-

or something like that.... i am getting distracted by
higgins ultra low track glue funk hits 1972-2006.

Haven't heard the new album yet - -
Was the guy innaccurate in his description of it or in his
analysis? If it's the latter then it seems kinda
subjective. I am not saying I like these optimistic,
anti-fanbase reviewers who act like they are more in touch
becuase they are not 'elitist', I am just curious whether
you folks think his description was accurate.

look

its basically just... autechre

Its good, but its not new

When i finished listening to it, i said "yep, thats ae"

But I never said "holy mother crapshit AE ARE GENIUSES!"

Its just more of what they have done...

kind of like confeild part 2.

but yeah, its enjoyable. Music isnt always about innovation
and doing new things. I appriciate draft because it is good.
Not because its new.

i have listened only four songs so it isn't enough to make a
judge...so far i like it,but it's abit close to what ae have
done in the past,i mean while the prevoius albums were a
constant evolution of their sound here this evolution lacks
a little, even if the have introduced some kind of noises
while confield had fat -beats,anyway it's different from
confield so far, closer to ep7or lp5 for me(reniform puls is
an example)well this is my impression

oh, here's my comment on the so called similarities between
confield and draft 7.30... I just bought draft 7.30 today,
and confield on saturday, and well they sound totally
different to me... I mean, Draft does sound like Autechre,
but it definitely isn't Confield 2... I'll be honest, my
first feeling, and mind you this could change, but my first
feeling about draft was that it's much more "outthere" then
confield... I didn';t really think confield was too strange,
or weird, or "outthere" when I played it for the first
time...

P.S., Tapr is the strangest and weirdest song I've ever
heard methinks... just nuts!!

one thing is for sure, they're doing crazy things with beats
and rhythms on this album... a straight 4/4 rhythm can be
totally fucking crazy, and on this album they have some
crazy ones... it's nice and funky!

Love it ! It doesn't sound much like Confield at all to me
.. other than pieces. The first couple tracks remind me of
more fleshed out versions of VI Scose Poise, or something,
gah I can't ever remember the name!. Theme of Sudden
Roundabout sounds a bit like uviol to me .. I can't say
it's better than Confield, but it's quite nearly equal
methinks.

Is there actually any one who can say one Ae album sounds
like any other?

And I mean albums, I do not count ep's.

For me, they all sound different, and that's one of the
things I just love about Ae. All different, but all
brilliant!

Hehe. Well, similar if you're talking about music in
general.. even electronic music in general. In a strictly
Autechrean context .. no, not similar, completely different
sound than Confield. The beats are less abstract but harder
to follow in Draft, and the songs seem to me to have very a
similar sound, whereas in Confield I found it quite easy to
identify tracks and tell them apart. Draft seems more
homogenous, not in a bad way, just in the sense that the
tracks are less-recognizable from each other than Confield's
more eclectic sonic pallette.

UVIOL, very true. I've said the same thing before in one of
my first draft posts when i first listened to it.

I basically said it made me FEEL LIKE A ELECTRONICA NOOBIE
again, because I went through the tracks, and couldn't tell
any of them apart for so long. It took me a _long_ time to
be able to recognize each and every track. DrukQs was the
same way, very hard. Draft def put me in my place.

why does everyone hate the review?? i dont get it...

and i definitely see some confield resemblance too, which is
good. half the tracks on draft have a similar
feel/structure to confield imo, but maybe i'm the only one
who thinks that.

i dont get it either.

why are we even caring anyway? its just a review. write a
review yourself and i bet you it will be just about as half
assed as this amazon one to someone else because its just
how YOU think the album is.

the whole "i hate reviewers" thing is weird. just shrug and
move on, realizing its just his/her perception. no reason to
get huffy about it.

well, other than the reason to make message board chatter ;)

jeez, what's wrong with that review????
sounds like some of yiz are just nit-picking imho. it's a
positive review to a great album, that's all that matters
really. the writing might not be the best but it does an ok
job of describing the album to someone who mightened of
heard AE before.

one thing that I think is funny is when reviewers misspell a
song name... I read one review for draft 7.30, and the guy
spelt v-proc as uprock... I had no idea what he was talking
about first, but he said something about it coming after
P.:NTIL so I put two and two together... damn idiot!!
