what is a good [FREE] software program that will allow dvd playback? I keep running into ones that u either have to pay for or are limited shareware type things .. let me know

most common are windvd and powerdvd both not free, but you could .... ;)

I've always thought it disgraceful that DVD drives don't come with full versions of PowerDVD. I had a crap version of WinDVD with mine and you had to pay for surround sound support.
It's a bit like buying a CD player that only has an on button on the base unit and being told you need to pay extra for a remote.

Sorry, I went of on a rant there- Mission Impossible 2 comes with a good free player. Don't download "updates" for it as it reduces functionality though...
