Stupid question for you music makers...

OK, there goes my good reputation (if i had one)..

i don't make electronic music myself (do play piano), but
i'm interested in what a person needs to make decent
electronic music..
i'm confused with all these terms: amplifiers, sequencers,
synthesizers, drummachines, the software
(fruityloops/cubase) and more of that

could someone tell me which equipment is necessary and what
these different things do (what they are used for
(melody/beat etc))?

maybe you could also give some examples (types/brands) of
these different machines

(please don't say: "what the hell are you doing on this mb?
move to the spice-girls-mb" .. 'cause i got banned there ;)
)

thanks in advance :)

*sees phob shake his head again: "and you want to be my
moderator"*

where do you get the sounds (beats etc.) then? do they come
along with FL?

If you can play piano, you should be able to learn how to
play synths, no problem at all.

Amplifiers are strictly neccesary if you're running all your
speakers etc. from your PC. Drum machines are just for
rhythm. Grooveboxes are quite a broad range of machines, but
typically a hybrid of sequencable synth and drum machines.
Synths are used for melody although you can often make
percusion type noises on them.

Software can do anything hardware can. The difference in
quality is debatable. Some are all in one packages (the
software equivalent of a groovebox) others specialise in one
area- making melody, percussion etc. arranging existing
sounds.

As to brands/models:

Synths:
Korg Triton
Roland TB-303 (squelchy bass associated with acid music)
Roland SH-101

Drum Machines:
Roland TR-808 (classic techno drum sounds)

You do get examples with it, but you can (and should!) make
your own.

Don't forget the speakers. ;)
Fruityloops is easy to use with quite some possiblities.
There will be a big upgrade version out soon with a
sequencer and a wave editor in it.
A sequencer is roughly a program where you can mix your
music with. Most come with lot of possibilities (effects,
softsynths). Big names in sequencing are Sonar, Cubase and
Logic.
A wave editor let's you play around with soundsamples.
Mostly used are Wavelab, Soundforge and cool edit pro.
Have also a look at http://www.computermusic.co.uk
And most important when you get some software, read the
manual. ;) )

thanks, i'll download fruityloops for a start

You do get examples with it, but you can (and should!)
make your own.

do you mean record with a mic (if you don't have any
drummachines, synths etc)? or pick(/steal) them from other
tracks?
i'm sure you should make your own, otherwise people can
easily tell "hey you made that with fruityloops" right?

thx again :)

Yes, one of the reasons people say "all fruityloops stuff
sounds alike" is that a lot of people use the included
samples and effects. If you start adding other plugins and
synths into it, it's impossible to tell it was made with
fruityloops. Someone recently said they thought my stuff was
made with hardware. It was made in fruityloops, but there
were sounds from a lot of other things in it and very few
original fruity samples.

You can make your own rhythm loops with fruity loops and
there are a few basic synths included. You should also look
at drumsyn (freeware) for making your own drum sounds for
use in fruity loops.

morton, i reference to your "how do i get sounds" question;
i have always made my own from darn near scratch. i usually
like to make my own snares (buttons snapping, microwave door
closing, etc.) and other sounds in my immediate area. for
synths or more digital sounds, you just have to do some
sound-sculpting. i know it is expensive, but i can't begin
to tell you how much cubase has enhanced the quality of my
own work... i would suggest to ANYONE looking to do original
electronic music that cubase is THE way to go. of course
money is a factor, i also use bram bos' taureg and tu2
programs that you can aquire online in freeware versions.
hope this has helped.

When i get my own computer again i'm gonna try and download

uzim said "whats a snare rush?"

snare drum rolls, usually increasing in intensity to
punctuate the lead-in to the reinstatement of the main big
beat. Term was originally used for bad trance and house
music because of its cliched nature
