In North Carolina the owner of Cubbie's restaurant no longer sells french fries. The owner, Neal Rowland, has renamed the fried potato strips "freedom fries" in the light of French officials backing away from a possible war in Iraq. The sign in the window reads: "Because of Cubbie's support for our troops, we no longer serve french fries. We now serve freedom fries," and Neal says his intent is not to slight France, but to take a patriotic stance and show his support for the US. "It's our way of showing our patriotic pride," says Neal, who says his business serves a lot of serviceman. Neal says the rename is much like the renaming of food during WWI when anti-German sentiment was high, hamburgers were renamed liberty steaks. |
