BT knows his shit

Ok, I know not many people dig BT.

Im not a big fan myself... but you do have to give the guy
credit... he succeded in being successful with electronic
music on a large scale.

Anyways, yesterday he did a lecture at my school.

He actually went to Berklee for a semester I think it was,
and dropped out to move to LA.

But yeah, so he did demonstrations with on his approach to
music writting, and discussed alot of in depth
recording/synthesis processes.

And I must say, he KNEW HIS SHIT!

Like seriously, he was very savy with it all.

I always kind of thought of BT, (and other mainstream acts
for that matter) (and im sure alot of the IDM community does
too) that mainstream electronic artists dont really know
what they are doing, and that they are just making simple 4
to the floor tunes, and blah blah.

But he really, REALLY knew his shit. I learned ALOT
actually, that I am goin to expirement with in my tracks
(mastering techniques mostly).

So yeah, it all just comes down to personal tastes really.
He isnt some moron who doesnt know what hes doing (although
his kinda dorky, and needs a hair cut). He chooses to write
dance music, because he really enjoys it. With his knowledge
of sound design and technical ability, Im sure he could
write some great IDM, but its just not his thing.

So yeah, Im kind of turned around on him. He has alot more
credibility in my eyes now. More respect.

So yeah, just felt like sharing that with you.

*Proccedes to hear the onslaught of BT dissings* :-D

I actually heard one of his unreleased tracks last night.
Pretty cool too.

um

very dancy. typical BT track, from the little I know of his
music.

Sorry I couldnt be of much help there. Great production,
nice female vocals, and really nice build ups.

I think the professor that introduced him said something
like "and he has a new album to be released soon" but thats

I admit to having a few of his cd's in my collection,so I
can't really criticise the guy!

p.s. did he mention getting his gear nicked from his
studio?

no he didnt mention that.

this wasnt so much a "Meet BT" thing, but a "this is how BT
works" thing.

He said he was really excited to just sit down and talk
technology/writting with people, that could relate.

So he basically just went off. It was pretty cool :)

15 years."

I respect him too, and I can really see where your're
comming from Zeus. I am sure he could create wacky Autechre
sounds, but he prefers to produce more
dance/world-orientated sounds for HIS style. ESCM is really
great, imho.

does his stuff?

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-02-22 15:42 [#00566762]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

well, ok

he uses Reason alot. He said he loves it, and its very
powerful.

he made a drum loop in like 2 mins that rocked.

He then exported it as a wav, and opened it in Logic to do
some DSP.

The thing he said that he encourages people to do most, is
to shelf their samples, and to make them time accurate.

He said that it can really save a track. It can make it less
muddy, and makes it better for performances.

Basically what he was doing, was zooming into the samples
like, really zoomed in, and cuttig out the preattack of the
wav, so the attack was EXACTLY on the beat.

He said he hates midi, because its so un accurate (we are
talking milliseconds here, but he says there is a difference
that you can tell)

Um. Yeah, he uses logic alot. And lots of pluggins. He says
he is using soft synths more and more.

yea, BT's cool but I also think he should burn for his
shunning of MIDI.

offline CS2x from London (United Kingdom) on 2003-02-22 15:50 [#00566779]
Points: 5079 Status: Lurker

Nah...MIDI can be limiting, I suppose.

Hearing all this is making we wonder slightly...perhaps
Autechre aren't all that amazing? Anyone could shove a pile
of DSP effects on a soud to create a fucked-up original
sound. Maybe what BT does, is in fact harder? I dunno what
I'm trying to say...it's hard to explain.

"he uses Reason alot"

Reason is hardly "state of the art" software, I think he's
paid to say this. Most stuff in Reason is built to be easy
on the CPU which compromises the quality...

"He said he hates midi, because its so un accurate"

MIDI is unaccurate, especially when a lot of data is being
transmitted at once, I wish there was something better too.
Still there's no reason to hate it since so many people have
made great tracks using this old system...

Okay, Honestly I don't understand the midi thing or the
time-correcting thing. I hear a lot of these terms thrown
around, but I don't think people really know what they
mean.

As far as I know, midi doesn't matter when you render a .wav
from it, right? there are no millisecond delays, or
anything inaccurate about it - that's why it takes so
freaking long to render a lot of midi information to audio,
am I correct? I could understand why he would say midi was
bad for *live* stuff - but for general studio recording,
what's the problem?

offline KiloWatts from Richardson (United States) on 2003-02-22 16:25 [#00566831]

right?

MIDI isnt rendered.

I mean, if you have a sequencer running 4 external synths
and a drum machine... it isnt rendered... its recorded.

Thats where the latency is an issue.

I've always liked BT and his music. There ARE talented
mainstrem musicians like BT and Hybrid.

BT is also a trained pianist and that is one of the reasons
Tori Amos collaborated with him on IMA.

PLEASE PLEASE tell me more of his tips. Feel free to

hey mr. mature dude!

Like I said, it works fine. This was merely a tip he gave to

he said its also super helpful when playing in a live area,
so the dealys are less noticeable, and gives more of a

um

so you think autechre and aphex and squarepusher doent have
robotic inhuman beats?

And you can still groove with time accurate peices.

I didnt say it had to be straight 8th feels.

He also did stuff with premapped groove feels, that arnt
exactly mathmatically even.

But the point isnt getting the ryhtem even in the sense of 2
is EXACTLY between 1 and 3...

but where ever you are emphasiing a beat, all the other
instruments hit exactly at that time as well.

it just adds a sonic clarity.
