A new company called "The honest Thief" has been set up to enable p2p developers transfer their company to the Netherlands where p2p is legal.
In March 2002 a Dutch court ruled that kaZaA BV was not responsible for copyright infringement. This ruling effectively meant that the Netherlands is the first country to legalize the development of p2p applications. The ruling is currently been appealed with a verdict expected this year.
It has been reported before that several p2p companies are keen to move their operations to the Netherlands to take advantage of this ruling. The Honest Thief helps p2p companies move from their operations from a country to the Netherlands.
Pieter Plass, founder of The Honest Thief said “We Dutch are a free thinking people and we’ve never been the type to legislate morality. With our file sharing service and our new software, we hope The Honest Thief will become to file sharing what the Swiss are to banking.”
The IFPI have condemned the company saying "It's hard to see how someone can claim they are making some 'honest money' by stealing other people's works"

I don't understand why p2p servers should be illegal, there is nothing illegal in those servers. All they do is allow people to search for files on other people's harddrives. You might as well ban VCRs, cassette tapes, the whole internet, CDRs, harddrives, the post, the telephone and all other devices which allow people to exchange or copy copyright material...

As it always will be. We are not stealing from the artists. I would like to look at it as a beneficial screwing of the major labels.
The artists get 99% of their money touring, not from the album sales.
As for movies, people still go to the theaters...box office statistics are still strong.
As for the program sharing.....the majority of the consumers who buy programs are corporations/businesses. They buy those programs in bulk. The programmers are still getting their money because businesses are constantly inspected to make sure their programs are liscensed.
Everyone makes out....except for the bitchy music labels who have clearly been overpricing cd's by more than 500%
Now they're getting thiers. Now they cry. ...and sickly......they're still making filthy amounts of money. Someone screws them out of a penny per cd and they raise their 3-piece fists.

"This ruling effectively meant that the Netherlands is the first country to legalize the development of p2p applications"
lol, probably not for long though. As soon as the "formatie" is over and the government can actually start running the country again, expect prime minister Balkenende to put an end to this, probably also to the legalisation of softdrugs, abortion and euthanasia (well he is a rightwing, christian prime-minister!).

Yeah, but where in their Bible does it say anything against file-sharing? Children love fiction.

actually, if he wants to get all holy on us...I will state this.
"Jesus" ,according to the most popular fiction novel(bible), was always file sharing. Spreading the word throughout the land!!! Damn, it's the same thing.
Hell, Dr.Seuss(the true author of the Bible), duplicated Jesus's words in writing and gave them to the world....free at cost!!!!!!!!!!!! and it saved billions.....even more than McDonalds!!!!!!!!

Hello.....where have you been.....it's not called "stealing". It is "sharing". Sharing is done out of the goodness of your heart(or blackness, pick your poison).
If you're one of the "leeches" on the networks and just download, download, download, and never share your own files, then that may be considered the lightest form of stealing.
But the great majority are actually sharing...SHARING!!!!!!!!

lol, well if that helps you sleep at night ;-)
Fact remains that you're listening to music you didn't pay for. You probably won't agree with me that that is not right morally... but it is illegal, no way around that, and that's why i predict Balkenende will do something about it.

i had to use google to find that commandment ;-) I don't like Balkenende at all, I disagree with him on almost everything. Not do i like the church.
But i also don't like illegal file-sharing.

"expect prime minister Balkenende to put an end to this, probably also to the legalisation of softdrugs, abortion and euthanasia (well he is a rightwing, christian prime-minister!)"
No p2p doesn't have a high priority at the CDA they only want to include the internet in some copyrightlaws from 1912, mr. Donner(CDA, Justice) explicitly stated that he doesn't want to target individual p2p users, he said nothing about the actual p2p servers. As for the other things you mentioned, yes Balkenende wants less coffeeshops but not a complete ban and I've heard him talk pretty positively about abortion and euthanasia recently, although he is sceptical, I think he sees the need to have these things... and besides, we have a leftwing party in the coalition with only 2 seats less than CDA
So all in all, I don't see a real threat to p2p from the new government

mtv.....haha. kidding....actually, beyond the stardom, your average pop star during their first release. After selling millions, their share does rise slightly. My number is not far off. It is an average that I gathered while researching a number of sources and interviews. this is planet earth, right?

Well i hope so! Almost everyday you read some quote from wouter bos (leader of the leftwing party), saying if they can't get in agreement about the war in iraq, there probably won't be a CDA/PVDA coalition. I really hope he's bluffing with that :-/
I know CDA aren't saying very extreme things already... but 4 years is a long time ;-) I really think things are going to change in holland in the following years... not in a good way :-/ But we'll see... i hope i'm wrong.

I too also buy more music thanks to p2p. More importantly, my purchasing is more *focused* since I only buy what I already know I will like. Sure, I'll still keep stuff I've downloaded that I wouldn't buy, but that's just it: I wouldn't have bought it anyway!
The RIAA whines about p2p killing record sales, but I think eBay is probably hurting Sam Goodie more than p2p... And a big thumbs-up from me for that!
