Can anyone recommend any good music making freeware? I use Buzz from time to time, but am interested in anything else that might be out there, esp something for loop creation.

There's plenty of good stuff that's free, take Mozilla for instance.

Coagula Light v 1.5 is a bad ass program I use from time to time to create hellish atmospheres. It's a Color-Note Organ that creates sounds by importing, and/or creating .bmp image files then converting them to .wav sound files. It reads the image data as sine waves and plays back the file after the conversion. It's pathetically easy to use and you can create some really whacked out sounds if you experiment with it. It was also just updated last month. There's also GranuLab 1.0, which makes sound in real time by generating masses of sound "grains". I've got this one too, but I don't think I've really messed with it that much. (I've got so many different programs I use already)

Try to get hold of Muzys, a freeware sequencer with VST support. I think it's downloadable from www.computermusic.co.uk.
Then visit http://www.kvr-vst.com and look for the 'free section'. You have plenty of choice in vst instruments & effects. Softsynts, samplers,... anything you want really. There's also the Soulseek or Kazaa way. In that case, search for the Absynt vsti, a killer app.

i'd recommend Kazaa. get Reaktor 3. VST synths piss me off. I know a lot of people lie them but I find the incredibly annoying. Still, if thats what you're after then you'll get them on Kazaa too.

VST is a fileform developped by Steinberg (developpers of the Cubase range). To be short, they're virtual effects and instruments you can edit your audio and midi with. There are quite some good things on the market. The FM 7, Absynth, Pro 53. Those are also standalone applications (vst's are normally plug ins you have to use in ghostprog. (wavelab, cubase, muzys(free one). You can tweak your tunes to whatever you like.

"now i have to be silly and ask, what exactly is VST?"
It's a plugin standard for software synthesisers and FX so you can use them in different programs which are VST compatible

I forgot to mention that there's quite a difference between VST Plugins and VST Instruments. THe plugin is in most cases a tradional effect but with lots of tweaking posibilities. This is used on audio files (or midi through a VST Instrument).
VST Instruments are mostly used with midi. To keep it simple, it takes the midi and take it through a virtual synth. Its a possibility worth checking out.
I hope I enlightenend a bit in this matter. ;-)
