imo not scary at all.....a track like 'the devil is in the
details' is weird, '1969' refers to David Koresh and all the
children's voices can be experienced as occult or something,
but I find this album rather soothing and relaxing. Listen
to v/vm's 'come to daddy' remix, that freaks me out
totally...:S

Ive always looked at MHTRTC and Geogaddi as their yin and
yang

MHTRTC is like a dream.

Geogaddi is like a nightmare.

They are both surreal, and dreamy... and on the surface,
geogaddi seems to be made exactly like MHTRTC, but if you
look closer, its much more dark.

This is why I think its so brilliant. Because its so subtle,
but it DOES affect you.

This is also why I think geogaddi wasnt recieved well by
alot of people. They had heard MHTRTC, an loved the warm,
surreal sound, and wanted more. When geogaddi came out, it
was still that sound, but this time it had dark nightmare
undertones, that people couldnt put their finger on. They
wanted a safe feeling album, and geogaddi is NOT that.

I actually read an interview with BoC, (remix mag I think?)
and thats pretty much how BoC described it too. (I read the
articale after I came up with this whole theory) So yeah.
This was their intention

i agree that geogaddi isn't as positive or happy sounding as
MHTRTC...
geogaddi has lots of dark parts in it, but overall i think
its really positive, and it has a more coherent theme all
together than MHTRTC

especially from devil in the details onwards....

well first of all the lyrics in Devil In The Details are
very positive imo
("...the healthy, receptive centre of your self"
"open yourself up to the greater wisdom and understanding"
"you are being tranformed in a positive healthy way"
"gaining new insight into your directions"
"allow yourself to be more aware of your pathway through
this life"
"more and more happily, more and more surely, more and more
powerfully, each day"
"this awareness will come back to you at your own rate. it
will never be more than you can cope with. this guidance
will help show you the way")

.....seems to be describing a kind of spiritual or
intellectual awakening, blossom or rebirth ( note the "come
back to you" part)

this isn't just a sample of some generic self help therapy
audio tape

then we have Dawn Chorus (dawn... a new begining, after the
lyrics of Devil in the Details, is very fitting)
in Dawn Chorus, the voices (which imo are very very well
done, some of the best boc have done so far IMO) are, to me,
saying "bye", which at first made me interpret it as sad...
but now i think of it as more positive... they could be
saying goodbye to childhood, (they are children), so you're
growing, not just leaving something behind
also, at one point the voices sort of come together, and a
girl seems to be saying "i thought maybe you were dead..."
(the words are sort of jumbled up but i think i hear it
pretty distinctly)
..like youre just waking up (anyone else hear this?)
plus the song is simply beautiful

then we have You Could Feel The Sky... again, a beautiful
track, and BOC said in an interview that the sound in the
main loop from the begining is supposed to be like a rope
being stretched across the deck of a ship...
(settin

offline AMinal from Toronto (Canada) on 2003-02-22 20:06 [#00566980]

(...damn my message got cut off)

...uh.... ok i think i was going to say:

...(setting off a new beginning? also a new kind of place..
teh ocean as opposed to land)

then corsair, which is, AGAIN, really beautiful....
..BoC describe Geogaddi as a " twisting journey that takes
you into some pretty dark experiences before you reach the
open air again. It has a kind of narrative. That's why we
ended it with 'Corsair', it's like the light at the end of
the tunnel."

...so yeah, to me Geogaddi seems to be about a sort of
awakening, or even revival or rebirth, and a new beginning

....btw that chunk of interview, and other stuff like that,
plus clarification and interpretations on what the vocals
are can be found at:
www.davidac.fsworld.co.uk/boc.htm
.....a great site

....btw i didn't get this interpretation from the site....
its only my own i didn't get it from anywhere

but the site is great to help figure out fuzzy vocals and
other stuff

i just bought mhtr2c, and yes it is floatyer and less
substansial than geogaddi,i still prefer geogaddi it has
more variety and more of a flow to it.....plus mhtr2c has
too many very long/short tracks and no middlers.....

offline KiloWatts from Richardson (United States) on 2003-02-24 03:20 [#00568636]

I'll be honest, the first time I read about all the
subliminal stuff, and the voices and whatnot, I immedately
fell backwards into thought about a certain bad trip I had -
something powerful enough to invoke thoughts about
occultism, demons, devils, awakening, transformation, etc
etc the whole shabang.

I immediately listened to Geogaddi all the way through, and
practically relived the damn trip... There are a lot of
psychedelic things going in in this album, and I don't doubt
for a moment that the main tone is to portray a person who
traverses into dark nightmarish places only to come out
reborn as a new person.

Obviously this is the core of any good story, but it
specifically has that psychedelic quality to it that reminds
me distinctly of that one life-changing,
dimension-shattering trip.

EM...er....

Why does it sound like a child is being tortured on "Dawn
Chorus"? The song could be beautiful if it weren't for the
sound of suffering in the background.

Maybe I'm a little sick in the head, but is that sample
child voice supposed to sound happy?

I can see how geogaddi would sound scary, and some tracks
have a very ominous feel to them (You Could Feel the Sky, in
particular), and I love that about the album. It's like the
Yang of MHTRTC's Yin.

Reverse 'You could feel the sky' and slow it down to 1/3 of
the normal speed. Now that is fucking scary...
there's all sorts of stuff hidden there, including a
crackling fire and a woman screaming.

From DavidAC's page:

If you take the section of "you could feel the sky" where
the reversed speech "a god with horns" occurs, and reverse
it, then the reversed section of track (normal speed)
contains crackling fire sounds, as though some sinister
ritual is taking place. However, slow down the reversed
section by a factor of 3, and new and disturbing details
will become apparent. The sibilant S at end of "horns" is
resolved as a woman's screams, and a tolling church bell can
be heard in the background. (I tried this for myself - the
results make quite disturbing listening.) BIBIO observes
that the acoustics might be those of a forest.

"Geogaddi evokes childhood"
I couldn't possibly have put it better myself..

Interestingly enough, there are some uneasy or "scary"
moments on MHTRTC, albeit, they are generally clouded my a
more melodic and happy tone in the foreground. Take
Turquoise Hexagon Sun for example - without the melody in
the foreground, the minor key bassline is somewhat dark.

It's as if the "dark" theme was introduced in MHTRTC, but
was concealed with dreamy melodies in the foreground.
Geogaddi is the opposite, in that there is greater
experimentation with that dark sound, but the dreamy
melodies of MHTRTC are present if you listen closely.

This might explain why some people are scared by Geogaddi,
and others can't understand what all the "dark" talk is
about. The differences are nearly subliminal in both cases,
even though the elements of both "dream" and "nightmare" are
present on both albums.

I think that the dark element on Geogaddi is really subtly
encoded in half-heard melodies and backwards samples and the
like that are pretty submerged in the mix.

The uneasy effect is almost a subconscious thing, really,
because most of the louder melodies are in a major key.

That child crying in the devil is in the details gives me
chills, every time.

off the top of my head,
the first track on side B (sixtyten i think?),
of music has the right to children,
is very eerie; darkest of the album

offline catharsis from Toronto (Canada) on 2003-09-04 20:13 [#00850565]

even "an eagle in your mind" starts out with a melody that
isn't too far off of being "dark".
"smokes quantity" isn't what you would call happy and dreamy
either.

Geogaddi's dark elements shouldn't seem too shocking if
you've heard MHTRTC. The effects are simply exaggerated.

People need to consider that BoC have said in interviews
that some of the stuff they put in is a bit of a private
joke. You shouldn't be put off the music by the dark
undertones.

Also, while I have noticed the dark undertones to Geogaddi,
give it a listen on a country drive on a warm summers day
and see it in a totally different light.
