IP tracking

red iv ider on 2001-09-25 22:52 [#00036388]

i heard that the new version of the messageboard was only
going to allow a single nick per ip address. i don't know
if this is true, but if it is, i think it's a really shitty
idea. in my opinion it crushes the very idea of what the
internet is about. i think that anonymity is very important
on the net, and ip tracking is just another move towards big
brother type surveillance on the internet. i know a lot of
you will like the new version, and that's fine too. but i
probably won't visit the messageboard anymore if this is to
be the case. i just disagree with it in principal.

dronox from www.dronox.com on 2001-09-25 22:57 [#00036393]

In some ways I agree with you...
In some ways I don't.

Yes, I totally agree with how anon...aninim... ah fuck, how
being anonymous is practically the essence of the internet,
but it would also keep the lowest level jackass from
screwing up the forums...

*shrug* I'm torn.

I'm MORE than happy with v4, I think everythings perfect the
way it is... I also think a Chatroom would be an AWFUL
idea.

I like reading past conversations and information provided
by other people etc... There's something nicer about a
messageboard. You get to type out, and truley think about
what you're going to say before you spew it out.

*thumbs down on chat rooms*

What the fuck are you talking about? You have one name per
IP, that's it, we wont see your name, your real name, it's
not going to be Peter Park from 2 Fuckface Ave, Capenisville
5940. Your name will just be Dickface01 or whatever, you'll
still be "anonymous." We wont know who you really are or
where you live. And what, exactly, do you need to do on this
board that requires you to be anonymous?

|REFLEX| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-09-25 23:51 [#00036441]

Haha.. no it goes like this:

You can have 1 nick her IP acoording to the rule, but you
can go around it right.. because you can still post from
anywhere you want under your login name, as long as you know
the password. That way you dont have to be at home or 1
specific place to post under your proper logged name. You
can just log out at home, and go wherever... blah blah blah
and login and use the proper password and then post from
there... thats a whole lot better.

Youd have to log out at home though because of the cookies
your browser uses, you would be logged all the time that
way. So log out and sign the pass/nick thing when you post
from another place. I dont really see how difficult that is
to understand.

red iv ider on 2001-09-26 00:05 [#00036447]

i know that it won't reveal my real name and address, but
the very act of only being able to post under one nick ties
you to a specific identity on the messageboard, and that i
don't like. probably a lot of people think this is dumb,
but i post under plenty of pseudonyms. i don't necessarily
always want people to read what i say with preconceived
notions about who i am and what i've posted in the past.

Boris The Dog on 2001-09-26 00:09 [#00036449]

I can keep three names. I've decided on this, Will Smith and
Sylvester Stallone. There'll never be an end.

red iv ider on 2001-09-26 01:47 [#00036561]

i actually don't have to worry about this, even though i
still disagree with it. i'm on dhcp through roadrunner, so
i can release my current ip and get another one whenever i
want

chris from u!l73q on 2001-09-26 02:42 [#00036616]

as anyone thinks they are so cool that all the others on the
board are dumb as long as they can change their names, i'm
very looking forward to v5.

please

Max The Dog on 2001-09-26 05:02 [#00036662]

But it works like this, I run a child pornography ring from
my house, we have three seperate computers running through
two different ISPs, so I can have three names.

chris from u!l73q on 2001-09-26 05:06 [#00036665]

sorry,

i'm really humanist usually, but
this sounds sickening.. is that some kind of humour or are
you suffering from something else

....^11 must sleep...must sleep

Max The Dog on 2001-09-26 05:09 [#00036666]

What humour?

Maytag on 2001-09-26 09:56 [#00036701]

Yea you would be against this. It would cut down on the
childish antics kids like you like to pull here. Freedom of
the internet nothing, you just want the freedom to harrass
with anonymity.

od from perth on 2001-09-26 15:06 [#00036766]

im def. in favour of the ip tracking thing.
it will probably have more pros than cons......
but still....i like the anon stuff where
they go as wassis name gary coleman or whatever and goes
"wha'chu talkin' about?" and the will smith ones were
wicked.
and they dont piss ppl off ....it'd be a shame to find out
who they are.

Narkotic from Orange County, California, USA on 2001-09-26 16:50 [#00036808]

Hey red you say roadrunner? I have roadrunner from so. cal,
where are you from?

fOrTkNoX from in water tanks on 2001-09-26 18:04 [#00036819]

v4 should add a streaming room where artests could go
and exchange/brodcast music and then we would know who the
real people in the room are...instead of haveing all sorts
of chums that might not even make our kinda music sayin all
sorts of stupid ass shit all the time......

Not MDMA Rodent on 2001-09-26 18:13 [#00036823]

Would they be here if they weren't interested in the same
sort of music?

demons from heaven on 2001-09-26 18:30 [#00036827]

fortknox you can't even spell artist...why are you always
shoving your music on everyone...if you're so good you
shouldn't need to because you'd be playing live...

red iv ider on 2001-09-26 20:54 [#00036862]

maytag, just because i called you a moron doesn't mean i
harass people. you should expect that when you say moronic
things. besides, like i said, i just want the freedom to
post whatever i want without preconceived notions about who
i am.

narkotic - i'm from north carolina, very boring place...
