sure sounds like it to me...

The Roots' "You Got Me" live w/ Jill Scott from MTV2's $2
Bill Show (at the 9:30 Club DC, July 2002)

11 minutes of middle eastern tinged progrock... strangest
version i've ever heard of this song

I think this "quote" located at the bottom of their website
is quite humorous.

"I been at your show there ain't no way to cut your flow off
You got to be the illest emcee that people know of word"
- Black Thought

Wow! How deep and thought-provoking. Showing so much
intelligence coming up with something like that.

I'm going to download it later. I've had to go back to using
shitty dial-up, so it'll take forever to download. I do want
to hear the song though. And I wasn't really talking shit. I
just think it's funny that out of everything they could have
possibly said, they choose something mindless and
pathetically unoriginal like that. Hell, about 80% of all
the rap songs I've ever heard basically say something along
those lines. It's just worded slightly differently. And
don't you think comparing them to Tool is going a little
overboard. Not trying to start shit or anything, but come
on.

i don't think it's a mindless quote. i wouldn't have picked
it; it's a bit cliche and standard, and if you were more
familiar with the roots (especially black thought, the
lyricist) you'd know that there really are a lot more
thoughtprovoking quotes that the webmaster could've chosen.
but i guess it's a line he likes a lot; it does give a sort
of "the roots are the best" impression that i can't blame
him for wanting to allign his webpage with. and for what
it's worth, the roots do have a reputation for being one of
the very finest hip-hop outfits of all time, and black
thought certainly backs up every claim he makes about his
skill. but most of his songs are about specific things, not
just boasting, so i must agree it's not the most interesting
lyric, especially for a newcomer to the roots.

wait till you hear the mo3 though, you'll hear why i
mentioned tool. not saying that it has power chords like
adam jones, but tool was just a quick and easy to understand
comparison for people here.

no problem. the rest of the site is great too. my favorites
that are online right now are the live versions of "quills"
and "act too (love of my life)". i wouldn't say any of the
other songs are QUITE as rearranged as this version of "you
got me" but the roots are famous for changing things up
quite a lot.

no it's nothing to do with tool to be honest, it just has
that dirge-y, psychedelic feel to it. jill sounds like a
pharoahess or black panther on this joint.

theo: i've seen them do punk rock and disco versions of this
song before but this is pretty bizarre..
