Depressed Luke wants to be a director

Hey everyone--I have a bit of a problem. Spookyluke has
fallen into this deep depression because he wants to be a
director and he doesnt think he can achieve this goal. He
doesnt know how to go about doing this, and he knows that he
doesnt want to go into theater.

This is ALL he wants to do--he says there is "no other
option" for him.

Does anyone have any advice for him? Its our 13 month
anniversary and I just want to make him happy but he wont
listen. :(

tell him that one always must follow his dreams, but for
that he must try as hard as he can... so he has to stop
feeling depressed and start working hard.

there are direction schools and all that

Are you guys in college or just high school? Like Tolstoyed
said, there's schools dedicated to that stuff, he should
look them up.

And in light of his depression, I've dug deep into my
magical hard drive picture collection for the cheesiest,
cutest picture I have.

We are both seniors in highschool. He has had no experience
directing and no experience has little experience with video
cameras (he does, however, have some cartoons that he made
in flash) and needs all of the financial help he can get. So
he doesnt think he can go to a fil direction school--too
expensive; none in Ohio.

He is also rambling on about how hes going to waste away and
die and college is a scam and all of this other crap. The
thing is, he WONT try! I had to get an appliucation from the
guidance office for wright state because he was yelling
about how, "ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO APPLY FOR COLLEGE! IT CANNOT
BE DONE!"

Im so sick of him. I just want him to use his head. And
maybe some happiness on the side would be nice.

sounds like luke needs to pull his head out of his ass and
learn that it takes hard work to become what you want... ,
"ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO APPLY FOR COLLEGE! IT CANNOT
BE DONE!"

Is he fuckin serious? What a lazy ass!

''He is also rambling on about how hes going to waste away

I can't help then, because I'm in the same boat. Except I'm
IN college because I feel I NEED to be, not because I want
to be. It sucks and I'll get kicked out if I'm not careful.
I have no idea what I'm doing or why I'm doing it.

Tell him he'd better expand his horizons then. What else is
he into?

Just buy yourselv a cheap camera, and make your own flick.
Start writing screenplays etc. Get in contact with
production comapnies, its not really that hard.

Corngrower--be nice! I love him! Hes just angry and
stubborn, thats all. :(

Ophecks--He says that all he wants to do is direct, BUT he
and I both know that he is also a very talented writer and
is very talented with things like Flash animations,
photoshop, graphics, web design, ect.

He just says that he doest want to do those things for the
rest of his life. What do I say to that?

This is a tough situation... I seriously can't think of
anything you can tell him that will change his mind... maybe
take a year off after graduation to figure things out? He's
got time. My uncle took a year off to travel, he had no idea
what he wanted to do, and he found his way...

mm his problem sounds a bit childish to me - I'm not trying
to be mean though. and although what corngrower says sounds
coarse maybe, it is the truth.

is this just something he has thought up recently..? or is
it something he REALLY wants to do..? if so, he'd better
start working. simple start is to make a few short films
with a cheap camera - just try out some stuff. maybe write a
few short screenplays. in short, he has to explore his
talents
.

and what Nacmat says, about following your dreams is a bit
romantic. lots of people turn out very unhappy
because they have an impossible dream they can NEVER reach.
sometimes its better to drop it and go for something else.
therefore, its a good idea to find out what your strengths
are, what you can do with your life that you are any good at
AND like to do. all pretty hard, but thats growing up for
ya.. :P

I mean, just lying around moaning won't help him get
anywhere (well DUH..!).

a good option yes, but don't go auditioning for filmschool
willy-nilly.. find out if you really like to make film, to
spend the next few years ALWAYS on film, if you'll be
motivated enough to do the course.

Thanks, everyone! And quter, what you say is very true. Hes
in a bit of a better mood, but he says he has "no capital"
to do some short films. He doesnt even have a good
computer.

Hes wanted to do this since eighth grade. :) He wanted to be
a comic book artist originally. He considers them pretty
much the same thing.

you don't need lots of money or good equipment to start out
with. he's missing the point if thats what he thinks.

you can use the dumbest of camera's as a startingpoint. what
he really needs is an idea what he wants to film.
much more important.

if you have nothing you want to film, why start filming?

If he's not achieveing his ambition he shouldn't get
depessed, tell him to get angry and channel that anger into
postive activities. Don't spend time moping about, do
something related to the ambition.

He could write screenplays, read theory, beg or boroow use
of a camera and churn out shorts, do whole storyboards of
movies, join local film appreciation groups, any little
thing at all.

The most important thing is not to waste time. It all adds
up.

oh, and another thing, get a camera that will do
'widescreen' pics, this will help develop your skill at
framing a shot, assessing lighting impact and other things.

first and simplest thing he could do is watch a lot of films
and think in depth about what attracts him in them and what
he doesn't like etc.

reading screenplays and THEN watching the films is also
good.

Scorsese got started by drawing storyboards when he was ill
as a child. You don't need anything to do anything. As
Jonathan Richman put it, we need to learn to play music with
nothing, with our instruments broken and it's raining. Some
of the great Missisippi delta blues musicians had to string
their guitars with wire off the screen door. Then they had
the flyblown dinner blues.

But I know how he feels - I get dramatically emotional when
I don't have time to practice music an shit. It blows over.
If he's depressed enough, anything you say to cheer him up
will be twisted and used against you, so just listen and nod
and be there when he reaches out for a hug.

Also, get him on here so we can tease him mercilessly. >;-)

skip film school, start making and writing movies, and move
to LA, where, within twelve months, he'll either be
directing XXX part four or on the street homeless and half
dead.
GOOD LUCK!

Thanks, folks!
I snapped out of it. Lindsey is the master of cheering me
up, but your advice helped, too. I get discouraged
inbetween bouts of extreme fucking confidence. :) So I'm
back to normal; casual ranting about Gantz Graf and aimless
rambling about why I don't get excited by old boards of
canada. :)

It doesn't really cost that much to make shorts. There are a
lot of people out there who are willing to work for free as
cast and crew. Find a film related internet board for your
area and you'll be able to get people in no time. Hire the
equipment. Technology changes so quickly that nobody buys
equipment it's all hired. Shoot digital so that you can cut
down on post production costs. I'm sure you'll have friends
with good enough computers to edit your film on or there
should be community based tv stations that will provide you
with use of their facilities. Good luck.
