vinyl is only expensive if you buy tons of shit just to have
it - you need to learn how to skip things that have only two
good tracks on them (like BOC's hi scores ep, confield,
drukqs) and only buy stuff thats really good

if you want to DJ - dont play yourself and save up for
technics 1200's and a real (rane / vestax) mixer - otherwise
you'll be wasting $300 - no joke

records soung better, are harder to move around, and harder
to take care of, but they're fun

and people wont think your a total asshole if you do a "dj"
set on your laptop

real dj's use vinyl

I got a lot of records yesterday (about 15) and it only cost
me £60. You just have to be prepared to take your time
looking (or rather listening) through the bargain bins,
white labels etc. to find quality "filler" dirt cheap. One
of the things I like about DnB is the amount you get on 12"
white labels for £1 or £2 which sounds pretty much as good
as commercial DnB.

More and more "mobile DJs" in the USA are using laptops... a
sad state of affairs.

Vestax (or Allen and Heath) are the only good mixers I've
ever used. After using one Gemini etc. seem like a joke.

On a serious note vinyl is a bitch to move around and DJing
of all kinds gives you a bad back (one of the reasons for 2
nights poor sleep this week have been bad backs).

I'm considering saving for a PMC06ProD (Samurai one), but I
need to get a regular paid gig to fund that. The PCV-37
looks absolutely lush. I should of entered a local battle
just to get a go on one (it was run by vestax, grand prize
was the PCV-37). I wouldn't of won in a million years (I'm
crap), but if I had found out about the competition early
enough to of entered I might of at least got a go on it.

I wish I could afford £800 for a mixer :/

Keys: Yes, a lot of interesting stuff is vinyl only white
label as well. I've got a great Drum and Bass / Illbient
hybrid by Spoox that sounds great and only cost me £1.
Acappellas, Mix tools & battle wax are quite expensive
though. I got a nice locked groove one yesterday. It's
really good, but it was £10 for one disc and only about 5
minutes actual sound on it. Still, I got a nice 2 disc
breakbeat one for £7.50

good lord - the vestax 05 pro is everything you need anyway
- and those go for $400 USD - good lord the samurai thing
sounds like a skam to me

no one but sponsored dj's and rich white kids can afford the
new vestax mixers - so they figure they'll put a spider on a
blue one add some bullshit effect that doesnt do much and
hike up the price - its also worth more since ISP is now no
more

buy an 05 pro - or an 07 pro - 07's w/ the laser guided
cross faders - good lord - i remember what my old one felt
like - sweater than candy

vestax's are a BITCH for studio recording and effects
processor using - stick w/ rane - more capabale

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing

Yes, I've noticed the FX loop of my vestax PMC-270 is the
only weak part of the model. The Samurai do resolve the
crossfader issues although like you say, they have few new
features. The normal PMC05 is very tempting too.

None of the tiny backwater DJing shops here will let me demo
them though (they have to order them). Oh for somewhere I
can ring up and say, "Look, I'm not some kid messing about-
I will buy one of the following mixers. Set up two PDX2000s
and a PMC05 a PMC06ProD and the new Stanton Scratch mixer.
I'll brng my own records and headshells etc." I'm screwed if
I'm paying £400+ for a mixer without having a go on it
first and as none of my mates have them I'm a bit scuppered.
It's almost worth a trip across country to "hard to find
records", just because they're big enough to actually let
you demo stuff.

I don't mind paying a lot for equipment if I will use it a
lot. I save up really hard for it and there's a real sense
of achievement when you have enough to buy it.

Euphonic- Yes, I'm currently being given old records by
people who don't want them anymore :D

yeah being given records is NICE!!!

honestly its like this

05pro - is a work horse - isnt the smoothest thing in the
world but is a beast, will handle anything and last forever

07pro - the rolex of mixers - im not shitting you

07 pro samurai thing - rolex w/ diamon bezzle - seriously

ive used em all and i would choose (for money's sake) the
07pro if you got it - if not the 05 is just as sturdy but
not as smooth

again rane's are worth looking into - i was a die hard
vestax die and now that i produce i cant fuck w/ my rane

i rane over all (or whatever)

I've not had a blast on Raines (either too expensive/not
popular in the UK) yet. What is it about them that's so
good?

Have you used an 06 at all? I really like the idea of how
small it is and having it and my decks in a tiny coffin
flightcase.

At the moment I like a left style setup (mixer, deck, deck)
with the decks in battle style and for that reason the PMC05
also appeals to me (using the 06 leftstyle would defeat the
point). Having the curve control out in the open on the 05
(I think it's under a panel on the 06) is also a plus
point.

Would you recommend a pro05 over an 06ProD Samurai (price
aside)?
One of the major things I like about the samurai series
(from what I've read) is the very hardwearing crossfader.
I've heard from a couple of people the non samurai versions
start to bleed quite quickly although it is quite quietly.

I hate bleeding. A pub/club I played in last night had a
crossfader that bled (only very slightly) and it did my head
in.

What is it about them (ranes) that's so good?

- they connect nicely to studio gear, and have great ins and
outs for effects etc. vestax mixers are for scratching and
cutting and ranes are for mixing and producing (i feel) -
they seem to be designed for two different types of dj's

Have you used an 06 at all?

- the slim jim one right? i had one for a little while -
unless you like to beat juggle there isnt really much point
to having one - they are slim but SOOO slim - i didnt like
the one i had so i traded it towards an 07pro

At the moment I like a left style setup (mixer, deck, deck)

- weird - i saw dj premier do that once - blew my mind - i
do deck mixer deck - battle style w/ the tone arms straight
across the top - makes scratching easier as you have a
larger area of the record exposed - plus for mixing drum n
bass you can play w/ the records easier this way

Having the curve control out in the open on the 05 (I think
it's under a panel on the 06) is also a plus point.

- i dont have a coffin - no need - YET - but what i do is
line up the front edge of my decks w/ my mixer - straight
line style - then push my mixer back about 1 to 2 inches -
so my mixers knobs on the front - not top - but front are
between my decks and sorta hidden - this way you dont bump
em - and w/ the cross fader higher up cuts and record
changes are quicker!

Would you recommend a pro05 over an 06ProD Samurai (price
aside)?

- i would yes - i dont like the feel of the 06pro - i dont
feel like its big enough to manipulate - the fader is nice -
but it really is designed for beat juggling - super cramped

One of the major things I like about the samurai series
(from what I've read) is the very hardwearing crossfader.

- jesus yes - you may have to replace it once - vestax's
faders cant be fuct w/ - well except for rane's ttm56 which
has WATER PROOF faders - hahah

I've heard from a couple of people the non samurai versions
start to bleed quite quickly although it is quite quietly.

- didnt happen to

- youll only need one for the main fader - not three!!!

email someone - and ask

Thanks for the tips euphonic.

I've read claims that the Samurais aren't just waterproof-
even sugar based drinks spills don't affect performance!

Hmm I think I'm being swayed towards the normal PMC05, it's
an extra £200 for the samurai and I think I'd probably just
go for the Pro.

I've often wondered about putting different crossfaders into
mixers... it might be worth checking out first, like you
say- £70 crossfaders are not something to be taken lightly
;)

yeah - well i remember when the 07 came out the laser guided
thing revoluionized t-tablism - we were all going crazy for
em - and i THINK - that the samurai's fit in the 07's

the thing to do - maybe - is buy an 07 used and replace the
faders!!!

i saw a promo video for the rane 56 before it was released
and they removed the middle fader - put it in a glass of
coca cola and it still worked while completely submerge -
fuck w/ that, you know what i mean...good gracious

i wish they made a fader that was malt liqour proof - then i
would be set

Re: the 07 used, very good idea. I think I'll do that. The
upfaders probably won't need it will they?

One of the advantages of drinking straight vodka as your
tipple of choice is that it tends not to clog stuff up when
you spill it.

true - wodka is good that way -

i woundnt change the vertical faders and i use my volume
knobs more that them - but thats my way of doing things (not
necessarily the corret way) - one thing i do know (though)
is that when something on your mixer isnt what your used to
you compensate for it

itll all work out in the end
