What is GYBE?

I hear that name spoken admirably pretty often on the
board... yet never a clue as to what gybe stands for or even
what type of music it is.... can anyone give me the
lowdown?

btw, I would have used the search function but it does not
appear to be working

Your heard sheer beauty, I heard an irritating lyric
repeated ad nauseum ;)

I agree that same lyric is repeated.
But its sang in so many ways that you can make up the
meanings, its not the lyrics its the emotions.

gybe and Sigur Ros are both great.. I think I like Sigur Ros
a bit more though. () took some time for me to get into but
now I love it dearly. I still haven't gotten into Yanqui
UXO very much.

The only problem with those guys is that they always build
their song the same way. That's a little bit boring after 5
albums.

i like gy!be a lot. i love sr. ab is a really great album,
totally changed my appreciation of music in general, but in
comparison to ( ) it's like bradley's beat in comparison to
drukqs. maybe not so drastic, but they've come quite a
ways. saw them in 2001 and again in 2002. beyond belief
how they evolved from lovely to magical ecstatic. i love!

I've been reading rollingstone magazine at work a lot
recently, and () by Sigur Ros has been doing REALLY well
down in the stats with college radio, and also in this weeks
issue they showed this chart from a radio station in a
particular town and it was like 9 or 10... pretty cool...

() is definitely one of the most gorgeous albums I've heard
in a while...

godspeed is timeless threatening music, sigur ros is jolly
pop.

well I've heard one GYBE album, and two Sigur Ros albums...
and I'll take Sigur Ros anyday thank you... one thing about
the GYBE album I have is that the songs are really like many
shorter songs within a longer one... and it's kind of
annoying... either break up the different parts into
different tracks, or keep some continuity within a track...

of course you like sigur ros more, they're pop. godspeed is
for people who like music.

anything that is ecstatic is called "pop" these days. i bet
it's just not qualitatively your thing, but like most
people, you must insist on labeling it and denying that you
just might "not like it"

ummm, no... Sigur Ros is just better... definitely not pop,
though I wish they were... I'd rather have that on the
radio...

offline jupitah from Minneapolis (United States) on 2003-02-18 20:25 [#00560658]

and so much of ( ) is just too dark to be called pop by any
definition.

offline str_ph from Cambridge (United Kingdom) on 2003-02-18 20:45 [#00560693]

I like both sg and gy!be but that's true, sg is more pop in
a way - for the themes of the songs for example: love,
death, trolls... Being pop isn't a bad think at all.

my fav pop records for the moment: Yoshimi battle by the
flamming lips and the latest max tundra.

i love sigur ros. and pop can be dark. what the hell are you
talking or think you're talking about?

offline jupitah from Minneapolis (United States) on 2003-02-18 20:53 [#00560707]
Points: 3489 Status: Lurker

well, you've got a broad definition of pop i think. when i
hear pop radio i hear anything but dark music. and your
comment implied that sigur ros are not for people who are
serious appreciators of musicm but merely those who will
listen to whatever's pop. kind of insulting i think. but
obviously you appreciate sr.

sigur ros isn't all that to me either. why am i answering

actually i was answering until i interrupted my answering
with stupid asking.

i actually have an actual contribution here: it is said that
gy!be has some interesting side projects. can you enlighten
me in this issue?

hmm... i like most of them... they're not just sideprojects,
but somehow releated things;
set fire to flames
silver mt. zion
fly pan am (very repetitive kraut-like minimal rock)
exhaust
1-speed bike .

i don't know... if you don't like gybe, then i'm not sure if
you'd like the side projects either...

anyway, my favourite one is probably set fire to flames... it's
mostly improvised kind of ambient stuff...

(shit i'm at school and i've got to do some work sorry. i'll
do this better in a while... ok? :)

whee!)

(niks naks neetta... was wigwam good?)

i promised i'd tell you something about these projects but
i'm not sure what to say...

fly pan am ... you either love it or hate... it can be
annoying or hypnotic, it's up to you ---. i haven't heard
the 2002 album yet, but i've read that it's very different
from the 1st s/t one i've got: clangy guitars repeat melody,
repeat repeat rep-zzap static noise apz--repeat... i like
it. try before buy... (btw constellation vinyls are
absolutely beautiful)

some interesting fly pan am reviews

wigwam was ok... tavastia was wayyyy too full and i had pain
in my legs and the place filled with middle-ages finnish men
(read: drunken men). but jukka gustavson and pedro hietanen
were cool :)

i was checking the constellation website. quite interesting
stuff. where are their releases available? can i order them?
i am interrested

i use stupido shop in helsinki... they usually have pretty
much constellation stuff, (and if they odn't, they'll order
it for you).
i think you should try gybe's latest album 'yanqui u.x.o'
too. it's pretty different from their older stuff. i love it
so much i can't express it with words...

I'm wondering what is the real title of the album: levez vos
skinny fists comme antenna to heaven or lift your skinny
fists like antenna to heaven ?
the first one being the broken french/english translation of
the second...

it's 'lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven' as the
2lp spine states i think.
'levez vos...' reads only in the back...

OK now I'm pretty sure that lift your skinny fists is the
name of the album and levez vos skinny fists the name of a
song...
too bad I don't have my cd with me to check this.
