Optical, the king of d'n'b

to me, Optical is the Aphex Twin of drum&bass. almost every
track he makes blows my mind. it's the structure, the
atmoshpere, his unique creation and use of surreal, sick
(rather than dark) synth/bass/soundfx were his genius lies.
and his co-producer ed rush expands this sound to a even
greater level.

Some of his highlight that i recommend u download:

ed rush & optical:

fixation [phatest ripping bass you'll ever hear]
medicine
the shining (ed rush & optical remix) [original tune by
optical]
bacteria
alien girl
sick note
lifecycle
the creeps

optical:

to shape the future
to shape the future (remix)
the end (part 1) [nice drum programming]

the full length albums he's put out (never solo):

ed rush & optical: wormhole [classic. warning, should be
considered a drug and banned :)]
ed rush & optical: the creeps

he also produced grooverider's album mysteries of funk. It's
really optical's album in many ppls opinion. his style is so
recognizable in all of the songs.

to shape the future (on metalheadz platinium breakz II)
ed rush & optical: Wormhole album

Optical is pretty good, I'm a sucker for dark dnb.
Although, I prefer Photek's earlier work.

best ever optical 12" has to be prototype no.9. PRO 009 -
'High Tek Dreams' and 'Moving 808s'.....did anyone listen to
the optical and edrush mix on the breezeblock lastnight?
click here for realaudio stream (you may need to select open with
realplayer). what do you lot think to the new album by
edrush+optical called the original doctor shade? ive heard a
few of tracks, a couple sound great, but some seem a bit
like every other dnb song.

er whoops. with the link, you need to do 'save target as'
then load it, or alternativly when the error page comes up,
then paste the url as the address so you access it from
within the bbc domain et voila. oh and fast forward about
40-45 mins.

that's what i'm dissapointed about with this new LP. Their
new stuff just sounds "avarage" and that saddens me. It's
not bad, but it just isn't the sick and raw Ed Rush &
Optical anymore :(

im really beginning to dislike drum n bass, all the
innovation of the 90s has evaporated. although I have to
admit that the John Rolodex Soldiers EP is amazing and it
has encouraged me not to give up on the scene...although it
is getting increasingly 'poppy' and all the dard stuff has
gone, now its all made in REASON by kids in bedrooms who
have never heard of a SH101, and it shows!

I have Wormhole on CD, I bought it the day it came out... I
shouldn't have bothered...none of their album have matched
the 12" they release. Sort of like a collection of the shit
they thought would damage their reputation if they released
as 12's.

The Creeps was pretty fucking shit too.

My favourite drum and bass albums where Dom & Roland -
Industry and an album called Champion Jungle Sound by Kemet
Crew. I have also gone of drum and bass...it lost it's
energy a long time ago and fell into the shit two step
boring as fuck beat. I have a CD by Back 2 Basics (Dred
Bass, JB etc.) where the only way you can tell what track
you have started is by the pitch of the two step beat. I
mean they even remixed the classic Dred Dred track into a
two step mess.

you speak nonsense about wormhole. How could it damage their
reputation if the tracks were released as a few 12"s?? it's
their best work to date

ps: Industry is one of my favourite d'n'b albums

If you like dark jungle, you should download my song TWINKLE
MONSTER... I think you'll enjoy it. hehe....

Oddioblender - Twinkle Monster - Track2, BARON VON UGLY a...

I saw Craze spinning some nice dark jungle at Zenfest II
here in Texas back in September, he did a fantastic job, and
saw the Jungle Brothers too, they were alright.

you're probably all going to hate me for this, but I saw
Aphrodite at Trees in Dallas on his urban junglist tour --
it was my best friend's birhtday -- he was dj'ing, and it
was decent, but he STOPPED the record four times during his
set -- no noise, just stopped it. I didn't know whether to
laugh because it was funny that he didn't give a shit, or be
angry because he was being a bit crude, then again, I'm not
a DJ, so i shouldn't talk.

I have some dark dnb in my vinyl collection, unknowners from
Advisory, P.S.I., etc.

because compared to their 12" output of the time Wormhole
was really bland. You don't need to agree with my point of
view, but when it comes to drum and bass I was listening to
it from the start.

I used to spend every penny of my hard earned cash on music
and I often felt ripped off by releases that didn't come up
to the standard I knew the artists where capable of. Go
Plastic for me was also an average album even though I see
people here raving about it.

I dunno if sometimes I expect just too much :P

Another drum and bass album I really liked was Torque from
No U Turn, with Ed Rush, Nico, Trace...you know you are on
to a winner...that album had loads of classic tracks :P

Platinum Breakz II is, in my view, the best Metalheadz
compilation. The Raven by Ed Rush is so fucking tense it's
untrue and as Roygbivcore said, Metro by Digital's really
cool and extremely progressive for drum'n'bass. Not at all
dancefloor friendly, which is refreshing.

very true about it being boring. but if you dig, there are
some cracking tracks out there. you just have to look.
I think it is unfair to blame edrush and optical though. I
would say the blame lies with dillinger and people like that
much more, but ultimately with the artists who make the crap
music.

Perhaps you havent heard the new dom and roland stuff on
moving shadow. or any new tech itch stuff. There is good
stuff out there still, and I beleive that there could be
more of a drill type sound coming too, but not drill, more
of a drill influence, as well as more neurofunk style
stuff.
i think there will definately be more of an 'aphex' glitch
sort of drum programming style emerging. who knows but there
are good songs out there! for sure!
