The Richard D James album, and ICBYD-I'm strangely dissapointed.

Ok, I'm trying to provoke here or anything.

I'd just like to know why you all love these two older Aphex
Albums so much. To be, they sound nice, but strangely
amuturish compared to say, Windowlicker or Druqks (not the
piano tracks, the drill n' bass ones)

I mean, Mookid is really nice and soothing (though, badly
proudced imho...hear that slight disortion?) and Ventolin is
interesting enough, as is Acrid Avid Jam. But the rest seems
like filler ambient/noisey stuff. Icct Hedrak is very moody
and brooding, but doesn't reach any sort of climax (like
most tracks here) I do love Wet Tip Hen Ax though-very
chilling. Overall however, I wasn't highly impressed by
ICBYD, but could bear and enjoy alot of it.

But, to me, the RDJames album is a joke. 32 minutes, and not
even too amazing at that. In fact, some of it is plain
embarassing, and bizzarely funny. I love Boy/Girl song, but
the rest of the album seems badly produced, pretty childish
and lacking. I'll admit it's very original for it's time,
but sounds like he either couldn't be bothered or was
exploring a new sound, and hadn't fully mastered it yet.

I think I was spoiled by Druqks (even though only about 60%
was amazing.) But his earlier stuff doesn't impress me.

And please don't get angry, I'm merely interested if anyone
else remotely agrees with me, or why you don't agree.

well well well, this is gonna be a hard fight

icbyd and rdj are his best releases imo

they are genious
they are 15 out of 10

drukqs is great, a masterpiece, but it didnt cause half of
the influence that these other two had on music history

i like these two least of his releases (except for mike &

especially rdj album is awesome

accomplished.

I just have a different opinion... I mean, icbyd is the
perfect album for me... rdj maybe too short but still 1000
years ahead when it came out

i think drukqs is going to get more appreciated in some
years

ICBYD has some very unique and beautiful music in it, it
showcases an almost perfect balance of many different
strange and familiar sounds composed into stunning and
fantastic tracks, and I can't think of anything else out
there quite like it... this is why I love it so much.

Thats because drukqs hasn't been around long enough to
influence music history. Just wait, and listen, you'll hear
it.

It's odd that almost everyone either likes both the RDJ
album and ...I Care etc best, or they like them least. One
way or the other. Personally I really loved ...I Care
Because You Do, right from the opener I though it was great,
right up to Next Heap With, which is just gorgeous, but when
the RDJ album came out I thought it was quite weak. It was
short for one, and the tracks didn't seem quite finished, or
kind of simple or something. Maybe it was that they seemed
so out of place under the Aphex Twin monicker, but I just
felt a little cheated and haven't really had the incentive
to get to like the tracks. I didn't dislike all of them
though, Logon Rock Witch is great, I'll always love that
one, and a couple of the others, but as a whole I thought it
was luke warm. Windowlicker didn't really appeal to me that
much either.

sounds like nothing else i've heard. it's the most fun RDJ

I agree.

obviously i skipped over ventolin tho)

RDJ album is not weak.. come on.. the equipment might be a
little weak.. but it is his strongest full length album (I
Care.. loses many points for "come on you slags" and the
tracks similar to this)
Windowlicker is his pound/for pound best work.. followed by
RDJ
4, yellow calx, girl/boy (and its 18 pound snare rush) inkey
string.. come ON .. how could you NOT think this is
definately a top 2 or 3 release w/in the aphex catalog

well said flea, I couldn't agree more.

I listened to drukqs the other day and found that it all
sounded a bit same same.
Just about every song had the same synths and I really
don't like all the "beat gibberish" he's doing all the time
on drukqs, it's way too annoying.
so that had me pressing the "next" button by the time cd2
came on. I never have that on either ICBYD or the RDJ album.

a lot of tracks on drukqs were almost indistinguishable from
one another.. and were very metallic/abrasive/grating and
were just 7 minutes of brooding melodies and skittering
beats.. a lot of the piano melodies were very nice.. very
calming.. but drukqs couldn't possibly be considered one of
his best.. although a lot of it gets better after many
repeated listenings

I guess the differences in opinion are just down to simple
personal taste and folks can argue til they're blue in the
bum about which is best. It's all down to when you got into
Aphex' music and what else you were in to at the time. I
came from a dancey-electroey-technoey sort of direction,
rather than, say, a metal direction, plus I was into Aphex
right from the start, Analogue Bubblebath 1, Joyrex, Quoth
sort of era, which is the style I really loved. I think I'd
rate Classics as the best 'album' (yes yes I know it's a
compilation) so a divergence from that style I wasn't happy
with.
Don't go thinking that I'm not open to new styles, but the
RDJ style-direction just didn't appeal to me as much as it
does to some. Sorry.

the rdj album sure feels very goofy in front of classics
(probably my fav too, the one that got me struck the most
when listening for the first time)
...i care because you do is another story... i cannot judge
it cos i'm all devoted to these songs, so it wouldn't be
obective (i'm a bit like theo, come on you slags as nothing
to do on it, maybe caustic window... bah!)

I do agree that ICBTD is a little bit inconsistent. I love
some tracks, but some others don't do much for me.

However: how you could put Alberto Balsalm in the "filler
ambient/noisey stuff
"-category is beyond me! :-p
That has got to be one my favourite aphex-tracks ever.

RDJ-album is amazing from start to finnish. Not a weak track
on there. And it always makes me laugh when people say they
don't like it's because it's too short. Haha! It's like
saying SAWII is great because it lasts over 2 hours. (and i
think prince once made a triple-album... that's got to be
the best album ever then ;-)) Come on... the quantity has
nothing to do with the quality! Just listen to those
tracks... they're all perfect. Making them longer would not
have improved them.

for me RDJ is far superior live as a DJ or with his own
stuff, than his studio work. I thinks most of the trascks
off these two albums work singualrily, or in a mz with other
electronica but i don´t like sitting through the entire
thing in one go.

Mix it up chaps and download his live stuff and RDJ is
bloody great.
(Same for Drukqs, Classics, HAB, SAW1, 2 etc)

anybody who thinks rdj album is weak and amaturish needs to
make an album. when you make a song better than logon rock
witch then i'll give you some credit. i think that album is
very technical and experimental. amaturish is some shit
like photek or ur average 'DJ XTC' type shit.

ventolin is on icbyd....

how could you say ventolin is simple and weak? you must

my 2 cents:
IF drukqs was one disc it would've been the best. i think
there's alot of filler on there, which when you read
interviews around that time, he even TALKS about it like
that. in that case, rdj is MUCH more tighter of an album.
there really isn't any filler there, to me (and prolly to
him, too).

Actually, one of the things I love about the RDJ Album is
the production values... I NEVER found them to be
''amateurish''... I love the sounds and the quality. The
beats on Cornish Acid are the best I've ever heard,
production wise... well, maybe not the best, but the style
is exactly what I go for. I just love what it sounds like.

And the warm synth on Yellow Calx, his voice on Milkman and
Beetles, those strings on Girl/Boy, the fucking INSANITY of
Peek and Inkey$... man, I just LOVE the production on that.

Aha! It seems like people might well be talking at cross
purposes here! Ophecks' post just made me realise that there
are (at least) two versions out there. One which has just
the RDJ album tracks on it ('4' to 'logon rock witch') -
this is the way the album is supposed to be, and there's the
US version which has tracks from the Girl/Boy EP on it. It
*would* be a better album with those tracks on it. But
that's not the version I got and it's not the version I was
talking about. I have the Girl/Boy EP as a single, and that
is great!
