i'm going to get me some autechre, i havent heared a single
track from them but there's alot of talk about it (esp. now
draft 7.30 is gonna be released)

if i wanted to get into them, what would be the best album
to get first?

lp5 or tri repetae, then work your way into confield

People seem to fall into two categories: the ones who prefer
the old albums and the ones who prefer the new stuff. There
is a world of difference between say Amber and Confield. I'd
start with Incunabula. It's their old setup with the analog
synths. Amber and Tri Repetae sound a little different,
because they started messing around with a proper sampler
(very successfully too).

After Tri begins the new era imo.

For me it was Chiastic Slide. Nneedless to say it worked,
but I think tri repetae or lp5 would be just as good. Also
consider the EP:s Anvil Vapre, Envane and Cichlisuite.

Confield is a bit too hard for a first album, and the early
albums Incunabula and Amber are excellent but quite
different from ae:s newer work.

one way:
chronologycal order, so you start with incunabula, amber,
trirepate... then chiastic, lp5 ep7 and finally confield

another way:
starting right in the middle, the album that has something
from the past and shows something about the future: tri
repeate

another way:
you are a crazy bastard and there is nothing too difficult
for you, so you go for confield and then you get hooked yp
by ae and do all the way down

another way:
knowing them through the EPs.
so you get basscadet and anti ep
then you go with garbage and peel session 1
you start dreaming with anvil vapre and envane
finally falll in love with cichlisuite
and prepared for ep7, peel2 and gantz graf

choose your way, whichever... you cant go wrong

i like incunabula most. confield is cool too after you
REALLY get into it, but chiastic slide didn't do the trick
for me. the peel sessions (especially 2) give an easy
approach to "newer" ae IMO.

have you heard draft7.30 yet?
a fucking great album there. i don't know why but for some
reason some of it reminds me of real old-skool autechre ca.
amber/garbage. it's got the complexity of confield but
somehow manages to be a lot more accessible, for me at
least. highly recommended.

he's a british comedic genius. He's done a lot of tv and
radio shows over the years, including 'Brass Eye', a fake
documentary series on TV and the 'Blue Jam' dark-as-hell
sketch series on radio.

Warp has released a 'Blue Jam' compilation on CD and is now
releasing CM:s new short film "My Wrongs #8245-#8249 & 117"
on DVD.

JAroen:

If you really want to buy an ae release to get into their
music you'd best stick to the chronological order like
nacmat said. The first two albums are quite accesible, Tri
repetae get more experimental and the newer the albums get,
the more experimental i.e. harder to get into they get. If
you are familiar with abstract and experimental music, then
I see no reason not to choose whatever album you want to buy
:)

It's strange...

There really is NO correct way to get into them...if an
album or EP of theirs sinks in, usually most if not all of
Autechre's work becomes enjoyable. I've known only a few
other artists (Aphex for one) whose body of work does this
to a listener.

Amazing!

:D

offline CORTEX from Canada on 2003-02-16 00:57 [#00556694]
Points: 3346 Status: Regular

it's tru that there's no correct way to get into them. the
only thing you got to keep in mind is that, if you dont like
a particular release after many listens, dont give up, try
another, because their sound has drastically changed since
'93.

why not go to the record shop and listen to all of them and
then decide which one to get.. i did that when i wanted to
get into them, except i only listened to lp5 and from only
hearing ~30 seconds of the first 3 tracks i bought it right
away..
