man I have been searching the MB... I wrote drukqs and searched by date... 1917 threads about it.... I want to the first ones.... I ve read like 60 threads about drukqs from those months before the release... and well, that was really a total state of expectation.
now with 26 mixes we know what to expect, but in those days people didnt know what the fuck was about to come...
then when it got released: dissapointment, astonishment... everything... 1917 threads have been written about drukqs since then
what do we think about drukqs almost 2 years later? I think its a masterpiece

I have the promo cd,.but it didn't encourage me to purchace the full release. Not even after listening to all of the mp3z.
Personally I was dissapointed with it, maybe 'cause it was overhyped and I expected to much of it. It's to much of a strugle for me to get into as a whole.
A few tracks are good tho,..

I don't know. Maybe I just haven't listened to it ENOUGH, but I really don't think drukqs is all that great. I listen it often, just to see if i'll one day figure it out. But i still cant see how people think it's his masterpiece. It put all the following above drukqs:
1. Windowlicker 2. I Care Because You do... 3. Hangable Auto Bulb 2 4. Selected Ambient Wrks 85-92 5. Richard D. James Album
Then probably come to daddy, and maybe then drukqs. I kind of think that his "masterpiece" is a double album with disc1 as I care... and 2 as RDJ. Drukqs just seems I don't know, so...exhausting? The drill n bass stuff just doesn't feel as mindblowing as it dd when RDJ came out.
I'm thinking maybe dnb is just stuck in that inbetween period, after when it still seems new and cool, but before it gets the point where its nostalgically good (which things like SAW have become).
Maybe in five years, when heavy drill tracks seem like retro fun as stupid as that sounds, I'll be able to appreciate drukqs more. But now, it just seems like a surprisingly overlong and retroverted release for RDJ.
Sorry that was long, just been waiting till i'm bored enough to type all this.
David.
P.s. I hardly hold the belief that everything listened to must be something new and different. There is nothing wrong with reveling in the past, I love it. Just somehow drukqs doesn't feel like reveling in five years ago so much as it feels like its wishing it to be five years ago. And somehow i feel like that hurts everything about the album...

I put ICBYD and SAW85-92 near the bottom of the pile. They are dull insipid works not worthy of his signature. I spit on them whenever I pass my CD collexion. I use their covers to wipe up my jizm when I run out of toilet paper. I shit on the CDs themselves when my toilet is filled up with jizm-filled toilet paper!
But the ICBYD and SAW85-92 debate has been done many times before.

Yeah when I got it I was kind of disappointed, but I grew to like it a lot, one of my favorite releases of his. Not such a turnaround as I had on vsnares' Higgins... but from o.k. to really good is a bit of a change in opinion.

Oh marlowe, how can you say such things? Sure, saw 85-92 has its crap (ageispolis), but ICBYD... moo kid, alberto balsalm, wet tip hen ax, acrid avid jam shred... classics. And not crappy "classics" classics, like phloam and tamphex, but the the first aphex tracks that really manifested raw emotion and feeling that has become so distinctive...
I was listening to moo kid recently on the bus, and for a moment, as I the setting sun cast a sublime magenta light across the countryside, the light fracturing between the trees on the crest of the hill, I was suddenly struck by its awesome beauty...

its the first release i witnessed and waited for... all releases are strange somewhat... i was very pleased when i got home, with my fresh copy of these 4 lp´s and listened to them the 1st time after waiting for so long... i been glad he did those fast tracks...!!
i didnt appreciate the piano-songs at first but by now i think they are fine, just pure feeling.
i remember a rumor that it was all afx-hoaxes on this release, dunno if anyone took it serious...
its good and it differs a lot...

Ijon I wouldn't not belive that rumour at all.But I could see how it started because Its not full of obvious melodies like most Twin stuff.
If it was a hoax(how could it be?) then however did it is extremely talented.
Its his best works IMO. It still can't figure out the programing on the whole album..its genius.

drukqs was the first afx and the first idm i had heard at all, i had not heard of it before i heard it and i gad a lot of expectiaions while holding it in my hands for a minute or 2 before playing it...initial disappointment but i like it now....i still think between half and a third of the tracks are crap tho......i like the idea of piano tracks, but i dont listen to them, they are too similar....i recommend it as a starting place for someone wanting to know who afx is......

they sound like really cheesy final fantasy songs, imo... as i have said in the past, if moby had released the piano tracks, would we still like them? would we just say "aww that bastard moby with his shitty piano bullshit is a disgrace to electronic music"? but aphex released them, so no, it's...it's....BRILLIANT!
blah silly rant ends now :)

right, it is incredibly deep, tonepu5her. i hoped he would do a bit like []-pusher, or dnb his way and he showed off. everybody saying it was hoaxes has no knowledge of music.
very big deal about this release is that you can play the "fast" songs in various speeds. its like having two or three songs in one, really genious-like.
to bob: i would recommend come to daddy e.p. and then rdj album as a initiation to his stuff.
drukqs is way too much for newbies id say... you make a outstand there having heard it before anything else...
respect anyway :P
