This is great!

Really refreshing after listening to Confield...they're both
good in their own rights...

In fact, I've also bought Mike Oldfiend's Incantations which
is great mimimalist music..

Because the majority of us LIKE Autechre enough to perhaps
listen to them...

Don't fret being a minority...

;)

I simply said it, because if I didn't I'd be accused of only
liking "simple" and "commercial" music and this thread
wouldn't be taken seriously.

Fine, let's stick to Tubular Bells.

ok great idea :)

well its an amazing album, groundbreaking wouldnt be putting
it too mildly i think. 1 musician, 1 million different
instruments, the 1st album on virgin records, multi-million
seller. what more can be said? genuis.

post script - never trust anyone who owns his own airline
and flies everywhere by balloon.

Yeah, true. :)

One thing I wasn's sure what you meant:
"theyre hardly in the same league are they?"--I think Mike
Oldfiend *is* in the same leage, if not more amazing imho.
Like you said yourself, Tubular Bells was
revolutionary....he was only 17 or so when he recorded it,
and it was so amazing.

I hate everything Mike Oldfield has produced. EVERYTHING.

but I hate nothing of his as much as Tubular Bells.

It was groundbreaking because it was so original at the
time. It stood out like a musical beacon and inspired many
artists to come.

why?

because it's too "simple"

is it popular to hate him here too, like Moby? (even though
I admit I dislike Moby's MUSIC)

you misunderstand me

theyre not in the same league - autechre cannot touch mike
oldfield. thats what upset me in the 1st place.

ok, I agree earthleakage...I never knew that's what you
meant.

Autechre and Oldfield are in two different universes...to
compare them is to have to compare to their universes...

I don't think that's possible...and, quite frankly, is
pointless...

I wasn't comparing them, was I?

empirically, it seems you may have been. mentioning them in
the same breath you may have well been.

nah, i explained why i mentioned them together already :D

Anyway, i must be really drunk for posting a Mike Oldfiend
topic in the middle of an afx forum. :D

i think its a valid post. as daweeze said, it has probably
inspired many electronic and non-electronic artists and is
one of those records that nearly everyone owns.

" must be drunk for being such an arsehole about it :o/"
ooh, aren't you aggressive?

Anyway, back to topic-he has certainly inspired me....I like
his lack (or seeming) lack of structure, which I tend to
borrow....my tracks develope as they please.

Do you have "The Bell" and "Sentinel" singles? If so, what
do you think of them?

sentinel bores me to tears. even the orb remix does nothing
for me.

read again: "I must be drunk..."

I like the Orb remix (though they've done better), but I
agree, not Oldfield's best compared to other works...

Did you like Tubular Bells III?

I thought the new electronica sound added a lot to it!

i hated TB2, i didn't risk listening to TB3. how does it
compare to the other 2?

i got the feeling that he did TB3 because his other new
stuff just wasn't selling.

No, TB3 is quite good, not quite the original, but better
than TB2...
