On the one hand they have lots of good music by indie artists, electronica, lots of older stuff like Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane and Ennio Morricone, on the other hand it's only 128k mp3s.
And on the first hand again, it's great because there are unlimited downloads in regular mp3 format that you can do what you like with (except share I guess), and I think the music industry needs to get the message that sure we'll pay for music, but not if it's in some restricted proprietary format you can only listen to for a week and then your CPU melts into a puddle of goo.

yeah i'm tempted too. they currecntly have an extensive industrial back catalogue.
i wonder about the quality of the mp3s too...
i'm also concerned that a lot of the albums were available in the US only due to "licensing restrictions" wtf is all that about

First thing, 128kbps taken in isolation is useless, there's other things in the encoding that can affect the quality. My experience with emusic.com is that the files are very good quality.
Secondly, the licensing restrictions stuff comes about because the labels might not have global rights to the music. Generally speaking though, that only affects those outside the US.

Really? So I get a smaller collection of music since I'm Canadian??
I agree about the bitrate/quality... I've hear excellent sounding 128k mp3s and craptastic high bitrate ones (for some reason, 160k files never sound good).

Oh, Matador version vs. Warp version, I get it. Matador is licensed to distribute it in North America.
Kind of shortsighted and oldfashioned given a global internet, isn't it?

In your case I agree. Subscription download is no good for people without a decent reliable connection. And as you say, your comp may break... you also need the means to make backups.
Backups - this is another reason I like emusic... I can just burn a data CD of hundreds of mp3s in a standard format that isn't tied to any particular PC by windows media licensing bullshit.

I subscribe, even though I'm on 56k. I can download an album overnight while I sleep so there's something nice to look forward to each morning :)

Welp I went and signed up... downloading some Thelonius Monk right now. I like the download manager... I also like that there's software support for Linux and Mac.
I'm-a gonna write to Pressplay and Audiogalaxy and let them know that Emusic is getting my pay because they let me copy the music I pay for as I wish.

Well shiznitz the files really are pretty high quality! At least for Jazz - if I download some death metal I expect I'll hear the limits of the 128k bit rate.
My nipples are hard at the thought of how much hassle-free music I'm going to download in the next while...

Yeh, I missed seeing that Mona Lisa smile attached to my posts.
Hey, Emusic has Akufen. Not too shabby! Huzzah for Montreal.
