I have never used one so; how does it work, and what is it
good for?

What kind of midi controller? One just for like filtering or
one with keys and knobs for filtering?

better you study the whole midi thing, you really believe
that i will explain here how midi works ? ;) you can control
synths, samplers, effects, patternchange, notes...etc.

They are basically little boxes of knobs and/or sliders (or
more esoteric ones like scratch pads, theremin type things
etc.) that you can link to synths or PCs to send midi
controller information.

Basically you can assign parameters in software to them. For
example, in rebirth I can use the dials on my midi
controller to control the dials on the 303s on screen.

Do a google search for:

UC-33
Phat Boy
Drehbank
Kaoss Pad

You'll like at least one of those :)

I don't know how much you know about midi so sorry if this
sounds patronising: None of the above make sound- they just
send midi signals. Think of them as a gamepad for music.

ah...I understand now...so it's basicly a way to play the
parts of a song and/or synths live...wicked :D

yeah that's the major thing, so if you also can trigger
notes ...floops can send midi virtual in the computer. if
you trigger a VST synth from Cubase, it also sends midi,
just virtual.... but you can plug in a keyboard, select the
channel of the vst synth and play it normal from the
keyboard, like a piano :)
