do you like any other hiphop then?

Aesop Rock is unbeleivable. He is amazing. He is one of
the best lyricists to ever grace the mic. If you listen to
the words, he is one of the cleverest wordsmiths of the last
decade.

I agree, I was just wondering whether he likes any hiphop.
do you have float?

i have to agree. he's probably the most talented white
rapper after eminem, and he certainly trumps eminem in
diversity of subject matter. then again, aesop rock is shit
in comparison to most of the other hip-hop i listen to.

I have got everything he has done including music for
earthworms, float, appleseed etc.

titsworth, if he is shit compared to most of the other
hiphop you listen to, hit me up with some of what you are
listening to.

oh and by the way I actually think Copywrite is a better
rapper than Aesop, and possibly Eminem if we are talking
about white boys.

well, lately i've been listening to black star (mos
def+talib kweli).

i just can't stand listening to aesop. his voice is annoying
and imo his delivery is shit

i'm not trying to be an expert at hip hop (that title is
taken by tits :P) but i know what i like, and i definately
do NOT like aesop

i have time and again mentioned who i listened to, but here
are just some rappers who i think are better than aesop rock
(besides eminem, who i mentioned cos he's also WAT: White
And Talented, haha), in no particular order:
black thought
talib kweli
j-live
dead prez (both members)
mos def
common
andre 3000
rakim
kool g rap
nas
pharoahe monch
gift of gab
ghostface
gza
q-tip
del
saul williams
guru
jay-z (that's GOT to sting, huh?)
kool keith
scarface
skillz
grand puba

Fair enough, I suppose Aesop is an aquired taste. The Black
Star stuff is amazing.

aesop has a cool voice.. it's not completely nerdy, it
definitely has some rawness and strength to it. i think his
delivery's really creative too. not many rappers can do
cynicism the way he does it.

I'd agree with maybe half of them being better than Aesop,
less than half being better than Eminem.

wait a minute, how do you get jay z above aesop? fluid
delivery yes, but don't you think he's kinda of boring in
subject?

offline roygbivcore from Joyrex.com, of course! on 2003-02-12 15:40 [#00552714]

it's just the line "life isn't a bitch, life is a beautiful
woman, you just call her a bitch cause she won't let you get
that pussy" makes me want to toss the disc in the fire place

in all hosenty, i haven't hears a jayz tune that didn't suck
imo. subjective i guess.

it's actually not that good of a metaphor. it's accurate,
but also totally crass, morose, and mundane. he could've
done better; i dunno why so many people quote that line, i
guess they just think it's cool someone said "pussy" in a
song.

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2003-02-12 15:44 [#00552727]

jay-z's a better rapper than aesop rock, aesop's a far
superior lyricist. i trust you two to understand the
difference.

titsworth you become a condesending prick when it comes to
hiphop. :)

I have probably listened to as much, maybe even ***GASPS FOR
BREATH*** more than you. I know what I like and I don't
need to be preached to by you or anyone.

I didn't actually quote the line in question, and it
wouldn't actually be one of my first choices for quotes
because I prefer his early work, before the El-P treatment.

offline jupitah from Minneapolis (United States) on 2003-02-12 15:50 [#00552737]

i judge them as overall artists. jayz is horribly
uninspiring, aesop's music has something to feel.

i don't think the life bitch pussy line is that good either,
i just don't mind it and can't see how it would make one
want to burn the disc.

offline roygbivcore from Joyrex.com, of course! on 2003-02-12 15:51 [#00552740]

a fire place

not a pussy

i hate that word, which is probably why i don't like the
song. i really don't think it's that clever.

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2003-02-12 15:51 [#00552741]
Points: 14550 Status: Lurker

first of all, you asked me to elaborate on the subject. if
you didn't want me to state my beliefs you shouldn't have
asked...

secondly, i didn't say anything about your taste in music or
say you brought up the quote, i just don't think it's a very
good one (it's the one everyone brings up). i guess when i
say it's a morose quote i'm saying i don't really agree with
it fully, so instead of an "accurate" metaphor i just see
his point.

i didn't even read the other posts before i said that
either...

pussy doesn't rhyme with much anyways...
wussy... thats about it.

cos it's not a clever line.. it's one of those cringeworthy
lines jay-z would say.

on the other hand, jay-z's a much more creative rapper in
technical terms, not subject matter. he may not be a poet
but he's introduced so many different elements to hip-hop
it's not even funny*. for specifics i refer back to the last
time i talked about jay-z on this board.

*it's also not even funny how many times he's ripped off
biggie, tupac, snoop, and all kinds of rappers from the 80s.
then again, aesop isn't entirely innocent of this either (he
just picks different source material).

my list was just what i could think of at the top of my
head.. there are so many rappers, the list of who are
"better" (bullshit terminology, but it's my fault for saying
aesop is "shit in comparison" to some of the stuff i listen
to) could go on for pages and pages...

you guys just wait till i write my own hip hop (and produce
it to boot)

i mean, it won't be great, and whether you like it or not
you'll STILL have to wait

i've been writing :D

heh, it was the "shit in comparison" that got me mad. I
like the diversity of the hiphop culture and everything it
brings.

There are very few rappers that I can honestly say I think
are totally out and out shit. The one that always springs
to mind first is Superhb(?) the Wu Affiliate.

"i sure do like anticon...i think hip hop hasn't really
changed much since tribe and de la and shtoff...but anticon
is soooo different 'it's not even funny'"

i'll play along but i honestly couldn't figure out if that
was supposed to be playing up me or you... i don't listen to
any anticon and my favorite hip-hop music is in the present,
so if that was supposed to be me it'd be inaccurate but an
understandable mistake (since anticon is for the pretentious
crowd), but it could also be you poking fun at yourself for
how you feel..
