saw II and getting into it..

Ross from Can. on 2001-04-05 23:03 [#00002672]

I've had selected ambient works 2 since last summer, but i
havent fully got into it. for the most part i listen to it
at night, which is either good or a mistake. one or two
tracks may disturb the hell out of me, but i usually can
listen to it. I haven't listened to it enough though, ive
listened to the 1st disc more so far. Any tips on how to get
into it? or maybe it will connect sometime..

AFXDUB from Canada on 2001-04-05 23:08 [#00002677]

Ross where in Canada do you live? If thats where you live.
Well.. SAWII.. I enjoy that album[s]. with a lot of aphex
twin it just grows on you during certain times... it took a
little while for that album to grow on me. ... just give it
time. Fool around with some other AFX. ... then listen to
SAWII in a bit.. you never know. you may enjoy it far better
when you dsicover other AFX stuff.

As I have said earlier in previous messages, SAW II can not
be listened too, it must be experienced. It is like the
sun, do not stare directly add it, instead, enjoy the way it
affects the environment around you. Directly listening to
SAW II can lead you to believe that it is repetative. It
adds a tone to the area. Think over it and see where your
thoughts move to, do work while listening to it. I made
another mistake myself when I bought the CD, I listened to
it at too high of a volume. This is a quiet, introspective
CD, turn the volume down to the point where you can hardly
hear it so it enters your subconcious. After repetative
listening, you will become confertable with the album and it
will be your own. And most of all, enjoy. Music is meant
to be enjoyed and this is some of Aphex Twin's finest.

thanks, I'm from around Vancouver..Langley to be exact. I
know what you mean about experience it, because i put it on
while i was baking a pizza the other day, and i enjoyed it
much more

Avid Window from Albuquerque, New Mexico on 2001-04-05 23:16 [#00002686]

Good, that is how is is meant to be listened. Keep
listening to it while doing things and I think you will find
it much more enjoyable. I actually look forward to doing my
work now because I get to listen to SAW II.

AFXDUB from Canada on 2001-04-05 23:25 [#00002692]

Avid Window.. yes that is right. See... I usually listen to
it while working on some graphic design stuff.. time goes
buy and it just lets me go into that mode where things are
clearer and working on things doesn't seem to rushed. Im
more calm, and I use my time more appropriatly.

Ross from Can. on 2001-04-05 23:29 [#00002695]

that also works with a lot of music..Like, if im walking to
school i may bring sigur ros, which is generally long songs,
and it helps you appreciate much more, because you're not
rushing it. When you're sitting down not doing much with
just headphones, you keep on waiting for something to
happen...while doing work, music passes quickly, even if
it's a long song.

AFXDUB from Canada on 2001-04-05 23:31 [#00002696]

Ross: exactly! Damn.. thats so right. Og by the way Im
coming out of Edmonton, Alberta. nice to see a fellow
canadian in here! Hmm.. well I like a lot of the longer,
more ambient stuff when Im just sitting around doing this
and that.. with lots of time on my hands.. and yeah when
going on a long bus ride i like to hear [ well and sitting
around doing whatever ] I like to hear some The Orb as
well.. they have a lot of long songs.. that are really
relaxing and mood setting.

Avid Window from Albuquerque, New Mexico on 2001-04-05 23:34 [#00002698]

I believe that SAW II is ambient in it's purest form, the
way it was designed to be. When Brian Eno, the first
popular ambient music producer, created Music for Airports,
his entire intention was to create a controlled, relaxed
enviorment, a tint or a shade of music. SAW II does exactly
that. Aphex also branches into more IDM and drill'n'bass as
well, but SAW II is his true ambient album. SAW I also comes
close. Note that as Aphex Twin's music progresses, he stems
farther and farther away from true ambient, experimenting
with new and obtrusive sounds. Take Ventolin for instance.
From ambient to one of the harshest singles ever made -
quite a departure. In short, SAW II is ambient in it's
purest form.

Ross from Can. on 2001-04-05 23:51 [#00002708]

i havent listened to too much Orb, though i would like to
hear more of it..I have the songs 'plateau' 'little fluffy
clouds' and that slug one..

AFXDUB from Canada on 2001-04-06 00:09 [#00002716]

Yes, the orb is great... I have 4 of their albums.. great
great stuff.. chillin musak!

Avid Window from Albuquerque, New Mexico on 2001-04-06 01:55 [#00002767]

Ross - Get: The Orb's Adventures from Beyond the
Ultraworld. It's classic ambient. I personally think it
has one too many vocal samples for an ambient work, but it
is great nonetheless.

Wow Ross, good to see someone else here from Vancouver being

od on 2001-04-06 10:14 [#00002802]

this is prolyl incredibly juvenile of me, but listen to it
when youre stoned and really happy.
guaranteed to enjoy it forever after.
thats why i love saw1, mostly. i personally enjoy saw1 more
now

PostModernVancouver from Vancouver on 2001-04-06 12:33 [#00002815]

No, its not an all ages show , but I have been to so many of
those shows and they seem to be far easier in terms of
letting people in.
I guarantee that you will get in Ross, Sonar is good for
that stuff.
Dont let it stop you from going. I know lots of 17-18 year
olds that get into these shows, so dont worry!

MaFx from Swaziland on 2001-04-06 12:57 [#00002817]

i dont hav selected ambient works 2 but i here it is very
hollow
so whats it like ?

PostModernVancouver from Vancouver on 2001-04-06 13:14 [#00002819]

And how to get into SAW 2??
Well, I have the whole Aphex collection and I truly
honestly have played this album more then any other Aphex
album by far.
It's a masterpiece IMO, and never ever get bored of it,
EVER!
The album is best played when one is being introspective
and all alone.........
Dont play it on a sunny day, it almost makes no sense ( well
to me it does, but I adore this album).
Play it when yer looking out onto moody skies, but dont
listen to it to closely.
Play it when you go to sleep in the dark, and think of other
planes of life, other worlds whether they exist or
not....but this album has the ability to teach one lots
about themselves..
I think this to be Aphex greatest asset in his
music.....learning lot about the very self....
Or if ya have a walkman, go to Kitsilano Beach when the sun
sets onto the gorgeous North-Shore Mountains looking all the
way westward towards the gorgeous mixed-colour sunbeams that
gives the whole landscape this total feel fo tranquility and
mystery..
Be alone and just let the mind wander...

Ross from Can. on 2001-04-07 01:20 [#00002851]

Postmodern, my Mom works at ticket master but they're not
selling for it..I need to get tickets, but where to look?
and usually how much?

Mikey Plates on 2001-04-07 01:34 [#00002853]

ey yall are FUCKED! listen to what you are saying!!!!
HAHAHAHAHA! ha

Ross from Can. on 2001-04-07 01:41 [#00002854]

what do you mean?

Ross from Can. on 2001-04-07 03:02 [#00002858]

you know what? for gods sake, i dont even remember hearing
'lichen' before! i thought when i bought this i listened to
all of 2...

PostModernVancouver from Vancouver on 2001-04-07 04:21 [#00002866]

Theyre not for sale yet, and these kinda shows arent usually
done through ticketmaster.
Either ya can buy them at the door, or most likely at BASSIX
Records on Hastings and ZULU Records on West 4th, but I dont
think its for the next few weeks or so.

Ross from Can. on 2001-04-07 04:44 [#00002867]

i'm still kinda unsure about if they'll let me in. My friend
Jessica might go with me, she's 19, and loves aphex twins'
come to daddy ep. I just lent her some autechre, and she's
really into stuff like that, which is cool. Because i find a
lot of girls aren't..

Ross from Can. on 2001-04-07 19:38 [#00002890]

tortoise are also coming here soon..
