MrAnnoyingTwentyFourHoursADay on 2001-09-21 16:07 [#00035114]

Who here likes them? How do I recreate their sound? Are
there any good free software synths? What about equipment?
What things would you recommend to recreate their sound? The
maximum price I'm prepared to spend is £300.

derelict from u.s. on 2001-09-21 16:11 [#00035115]

why not CREATE YOUR OWN SOUND...not recreate theirs or
someone elses sound.......

tea.pot on 2001-09-21 16:16 [#00035116]

boards of canada are great, but maybe you should make your
own sound... its much more fun and intersting.

Chrispy from UK on 2001-09-21 16:22 [#00035118]

BOC are great!

Anyone who knows how to help him should still give him a
hand. It's good prcatice to re-create sounds aslong as there
is a balance of that and your own sounds. Dont you think?

It isn't as satisfying as making your own stuff though.

MrAnnoyingTwentyFourHoursADay on 2001-09-21 16:26 [#00035120]

Oh shut the fuck up, all of you. I'm not trying to copy
them. I want the equipment so I COULD recreate it if I
wanted. Are you going to help me or not?

Gypsy Cream from the biscuit barrell on 2001-09-21 16:31 [#00035122]

Not, bitch. Take your £300 and shove it up your arse,
cuntboy.

MrAnnoyingTwentyFourHoursADaySevenDaysAWeekFiftyTw on 2001-09-21 16:32 [#00035123]

fuck off and die

Chrispy from UK on 2001-09-21 16:32 [#00035124]

I was sticking up for up for you if you wanted to notice.
I'm afraid I dont really know. You'll find out soon when
others log on.

I will fuck off soon coz I want to go home.

Gypsy Cream from the biscuit barrell on 2001-09-21 16:40 [#00035129]

Mr Annoying, you need to have a wank, drink a nice cup of
tea and chill out. Too much repressed anger. Bullied at
school perchance? Hmmmm bumboy?

Cocksucker on 2001-09-21 16:43 [#00035132]

fuck you

Did you choose that nickname or is it a type of job
description?

An analog synthesizer would be the ideal instrument to use
hardware wise. Korg MS-2000 is a good one, or a Roland. I
wouldn't go for a digital synth because you are limited in
sound generation. Analog synths all you to edit wave
patterns and LFOs. It's quite nice. I'm sure Boards of
Canada use a nice analog synth There are also of course
some good software programs out there that emulate some
hardware synths, 303, 404, etc. For drum patterns I would
suggest EXS24 software tool that can be used to Logic Audio.
Check out this site for software reviews/informatin.

Hope this helps.

korg ms2000 isnt analog! ive got one, trust me. ive seen boc
live and they use a roland sh101 a laptop and a big keyboard
for triggering sounds from their sampler.

you dont even need a sh101 or anything analog. you can do
anything really with a software sampler. try gigasampler or
one of those and a sequencer like cubase. the only other
thing you need is good knowledge of music

do you know what rhythm/melody/harmony is?

you will need a book on music theory

and trust me, you dont need hardware equipment.

by the way, BoC use native instruments software such as
reaktor...

hope this helps!

MrAnnoyin on 2001-09-22 16:21 [#00035446]

I know what rythm/harmony/melody are. Anyway, thanks
everyone for your help. As I say - I was originally asking
how I could recreate their sound if I wanted. I think
they're great but obviously I would want to develop my own
unique sound.

MrAnnoyin on 2001-09-22 16:22 [#00035447]

How do I use Reaktor? With all the synths in it, there's a
delay between the time of pressing the key and the time of
the note actually playing. That makes it hard to keep in
time.

Gl;itch from New Zealand on 2001-09-22 17:03 [#00035451]

just buy stuff that came before the 90s' any old analogue
synth can make cool noise man.

-a from --- on 2001-09-22 18:11 [#00035463]

Excuse me, it's a modeling analog synth.

saw fan from Sawland on 2001-09-22 18:39 [#00035474]

It doesnt make sense to say "how can i recreate the BoC
sound" because all of their songs sound so different and
have very different methods.

For instance SixtyTen has a Roland sh-101 and samples but
everything is modified. There are many ideas in the track.

Unfortunately, there is no Synth X to make lush music :(

The most important thing is being able to make the music
before you can do the sounds.

I read in an interview that BoC use samples of their own
playing, heavily processed by technology.

No matter what people tell you, you can't imitate Boards of
Canada. They've been making music for over 10 years and know
exactly what they're doing. Even when they don't ;).

Remember: BoCs music is made mostly with software samplers,
don't let people convince you to waste your money on
expensive synths.

PS. Telling people that the Korg MS2000 is an analog synth
is unfair. "Analog modeling" means its a fake Analog synth
when it is in fact a digital synth. It is not the same. Only
an emulation. Sorry to get angry. Don't want people to waste
their money because of incorrect information.

Hope this helps!

Reason is a very powerfull program, but it's really
expensive. It's $400, but I don't how much it is in £s.

For more information about it, you can go to:

Yeah you should emulate there sound, why not.

As for equipment I know for certain they use a Roland sh 101
i.e. ROGYBIV bassline. I would think that asides from that
many of there leads and pads are created with a minimoog.
As for samples I was told that the use the old 16 bit Akai
samplers ( s 3000), the ones that have the 3.5 micro floppy
disc and that makes sense because many of the early samplers
had more of a grainy lo fi sound to them. It also makes
sense that they might use a piece of equipment such as this
because the minimoog and th sh 101 are monophonic and cannot
produce chords.
Save yourself the money and trouble finding these items get
yourself a copy of Ableton Live ( even if it is the Lite
version ) a good interface and go to town. Good luck.
