what NIN should i buy

I have only heard few NIN tracks but I like them all
basicly.
I have never downloaded a whole album or heard a whole
album.

I'm going to order my first NIN-album, but what should it
be?

'Sky Valley'

oh... wait....

Well I'd say either 'Pretty Hate Machine' or 'The Downward
Spiral'

in my opinion you should get The Downward Spiral

or Pretty Hate Machine

if you like wish a lot, you should also get the Broken ep

that is briliant

okay here's a run down

Pretty Hate Machine = classic NIN, 80's sounding

Broken ep = his most sinister sounding work, very sinister
sounding indeed (in my opinion)

Downward Spiral = VERY industrial

The Fragile = he's calming down a bit...but still great
album

Perfect Drug is from the soundtrack to Lost Highway

March Of The Pigs and Closer is from The Downward Spiral

and Wish is from Broken ep

I have a shitload of NIN CDs. I have halo 1 to 15 I think. I
didn't get the new live CD as ... *shrugs* fuck it. I just
didn't go for it. The Downward Spiral is the best to start
with I think. Then get Further Down The Spiral and that will
do until you wish to explore more.

Broken EP is fantastic. 'Come come come come you gotta fill
me up' Love it. }:>

Pretty Hate Machine. I think that if you arent familiar with
an artist, you should start with their first album. *nods
head* Usually. Either that or the Downward Spiral (my
favorite!) :D

I have a 12" promo of Starfuckers as the A side. I like that
track but my problem with NIN is it gets plaid to death.
I've heard Closer so many times I can hear it at will in
full detail by focusing my mind and Starfuckers is getting
to be the same.

I'm not into NIN much and my large collection of their stuff
is gathering dust.

I had the "fixed" ep once....remix of broken, but I thought
it sucked

I recommend the live album
And All That Could Have Been..it's a great primer with all
the essential tracks from all the releases(a notable
omission is Hapiness in Slavery which I really dig)
and though it is a live album the production is crisp and
crystal clear making even the songs from Pretty Hate Machine
sound Huuuge...and the live crowd noise are only there at
the begining of the tracks and then cleverly filtered out..

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2003-02-05 05:13 [#00541636]

Definitely get Pretty Hate Machine--here's why:
01) It was produced by flood in the late 80's.
02) It's the most one-man of his records.
03) Every track is top-notch, while other records have some
disappointing ones.
04) You don't have to put up with those insufferable
guitars! :D

offline Fernz from A Scottish Wanker (United Kingdom) on 2003-02-05 05:15 [#00541640]

My unbiased opinion...

Pretty Hate Machine = Think 80's.
Broken = ESSENTIAL
Fixed = shit
Downward Spiral = BUY IT
Further... = stick to the singles from Spiral (Closer, March
of the Pigs...)
The Fragile = Not bad but if you love the earlier stuff it
may disappoint you...
Things Falling Apart = Only for the track "METAL". The rest
is shit.

:)

I love Fixed..the Tracks remixed by Coil and Foetus..sound
godlike..

offline Fernz from A Scottish Wanker (United Kingdom) on 2003-02-05 05:18 [#00541643]

I dunno, i found that EP a tad repetitive...

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2003-02-05 05:19 [#00541645]
Points: 1955 Status: Lurker

I like fixed, too!
I'm not one for slave screams, but the rest are brilliant
variations!

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2003-02-05 05:22 [#00541649]
Points: 1955 Status: Lurker

It'd be hard to get into nails with a remix record, though,
simply because he doesn't do most of the remixes and they
all vary so much from the originals (except head like a
hole(slate), i believe)
And hurt(quiet), actually :)
I definitely recommend PHM first. The tracks will
familiarize you with who Trent Reznor is, and then you'll
probably like the others more. PHM is easily my favorite
debut album of all time.

offline oscillik from the fires of orc on 2003-02-05 05:26 [#00541655]

screaming slave is fucking brilliant

you shouldn't listen to screaming slave and expect it to be
"music" as such, because to me, the whole point of screaming
slave is that it's literally an expression

there's not meant to be structure to it or anything

I'm with you on this dude. I'd listen more to see if it
would grow on me but the sheer amount of times 'Starfuckers'
is remixed on that is laughable to me. It seemed half assed
compared to other remix CDs he has had out and such. I'm
just not into NIN as much as I was I guess. I didn't like
that CD at all really.

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2003-02-05 05:28 [#00541662]
Points: 1955 Status: Lurker

No, I can appreciate that it's noise, it's just not my
taste. :)

Why do people not like things being remixed multiple times?
I've never understood that. I don't see what's wrong with
ten remixes of the same track! :)

Mind you The Frail(version) wasnt too bad. I still managed
to find all Halo numbers except that Closure vid... Just to
fill the collection. I still say his cover of Soft Cell's
MEMORIBILIA was decent. :)

the only starfuckers inc mix i liked was charlie's

it's fucking brililant

i liked things falling apart, it was okay, but there were a
couple of dud tracks on there
i mean, one of the starfuckers at the beginning sounded like
something sonique would do! lol

i expected to hear her singing "and that's what takes me
high"

and another thing......you can't go by the remix cd's as NIN
work because altthough Trent probably produces them, it's
not really trent is it?

you should only really stick to actual nin material

Pretty Hate Machine
Broken
The Downward Spiral
The Fragile
And All That Could Have Been

i say definately get pretty hate machine and broken, those
two are my favs of his. downward gets me real depressed.
fragile is an awesome album too, but start with the earlier
stuff.

fernz - get closure (if you still dig nin enough to watch ~2
hrs. of sick shit) it will blow your mind

i've seen a REALLY bad quality digitisation of it

(it was copied digitally from a VHS)

very pixelated, and a bit fuzzy at some parts, but it sums
up the feeling and atmosphere of Broken totally

then the drums come in, and then vocals and synth

whereas the video version is fucking brilliant synth, then
drums, then vocals

i just prefer the video version

Is the video for Sin the one with the two guys kissing and
Trent spinning around on a wheel? I loved that. The version
of Sin on the EP has much more power then the album version
but Pretty Hate Machine is a very beautiful yet slightly
bitter album. I relate well. The demo tape he had out before
that had 'Twist' on also which I fucking adore. Hmm, my lust
for NIN is being rekindled.

i think so, i've only seen screengrabs of Sin (don't have
Closure) but from what you said about the spinning wheel,
taht's definately Sin

Sin is probably my fave off PHM

he couldn't release Twist though TVT Records, because of the
self-harming stuff, so he had to change it to Ringfinger

that's what started off the "hate" he had for the label
(seen in Broken "no thanks, you know who you fucking are")

and which is why he started his own label

whilst recording the material for Broken, he had to use
flase band names and psudomyms so TVT wouldn't catch on

she's also got one of the many "best of" kinda things with

by David Bowie if you don't have it. It's close to NIN style
and very cool. It has the original of IAOA on too.
