hopefully i'm going to be moving to Burton-on-Trent so I can be closer to my girlfriend, and when i'm there i'm hoping to get together some equipment so i can start gigging and performing live
what kind of setup would be good for starting out?
at first i was thinking about just getting a computer, controller keyboard and a sampler and trigger samples and stuff, but then i just thought about ableton live
is it any good, and is it easy to use? i mean, am i gonna have to read the whole fucking manual before i can start using it?
i know how to use reason/cubase/recycle/rebirth

good question. Ableton is a nice option I think (havent used it, but sounds good in reviews etc.)
Allthough I prefer having 8 or 16 channels under my hands to mix things live. I'm a hardware guy, allthough there is a lot of good software to0.
Maybe a laptop and a evolution uc-33 (see thread I am about to start...) and reason/cubase/etc ?

see that's the thing with me
i'm a hardware guy too, i prefer to be tehre, hands on, tweaking knobs and pots, and faders
it really pisses me off having to use a mouse, and from my experience using a controller keyboard with software, it's not real time, there's loads of latency
that might just be the interface or something, i dunno
but i would prefer to be using hardware

I'm plannign on live performances in the near future.
My setup: Laptop: (havent got it yet, but the order is placed :):):) )
spirit folio F1 16 channel Akai S3000XL novation superbassstation Roland mks50 (and maybe I'll bring my prophecy too)
And maybe I'll buy that evolution thing, which also acts as a midi interface.
But if you have computer/sequencer, a sampler a mixer and a good multitimbral synth (with preferrable more than 2 outputs) you are in business :):):)

what laptop mate?
an ideal setup for me would be a laptop one of those little behrringer desks and akai s300xl an Access Virus Indigo2 and either an sh-101 or an mc-202
(just because i'm an aphex wannabe)
heh :)
i'd have one of those control surfaces too
i'd use the indigo2 as my primary midi controller i think

i would use a notebook wit a 8 channel audio output for your mixer, i have an alesis mmt8 hardware sequencer, perfect for live performing. i also would use ableton live and a midi control box, tweaking some vst effects...
i'm study over 1,5 years for a live setup ... if my first album is done ... i'll look forward to that ... don't use a sampler, i had an akai sampler and selled it, they're damn bad in flexibility, better u use a hardware sequencer (maybe a drummachine or something)

i'd still have to use a sampler in a live setup
iot's just me, i prefer hardware stuff (and it'll be my downfall, they're usually fucking expensive compared to their software counterparts!)
and i have found that usually, softsynths/samplers don't sound as hard hitting as hardware.....they dont seem to have the oompff that you get from hardware
that's my opinion anyways

hehe....
for notebooks: get a p4-M (not the desktop cpu's, they're loud and needs much power) enough memory (ddr, with a fast fsb) a 15" screen with a big resolution (1600x1200, for all your plug ins) USB 2.0 for your midi devices and interfaces ...
and for synth's, get a nordrack, they have some terrible hard attack phases for bloody ears ...

i'd LOVE to have one of the new apple powerbooks, you know, the 17" ones
i'd get Virtual Windows on there too
i'd have a big fucking res, definately in the 1600x1200 region, possibly higher
i like the nord rack 2 (used it at college), it's a very hard hitting synth, it stands out from the rest, and the sweeps are unmistakable....you can tell if its a nord or not
but i HAVE to have an Indigo2

i warned you about samplers.... what's the difference ? the akai s3000 is also just a rack, you don't have any control about it without a keyboard or a sequencer, you also will have a memory problem, you need a good midi interface without any latency, then you have to programm all your keyranges, samples, LFO's and envelopes, and that with the MIDI standard, good luck man, i tried 2 years and i tell you it's a fuck ...programming modulation and sysex messages is not that funny ..

well, i would prefer to use hardware, but i do understand what you're saying
it is a pain in the arse to program them
i would use something like halion (what's that other one about, it's supposed to be really good)
but i'd have to make sure i had a SHIT LOAD of RAM....like over 1GB
and yeah, it would have to be ddr for me
;)

same here, i like to twiddling poti's and pressing knobs, that's why i have an external sequencer, it gives you much more flexibility than clicking around your screen, i also have a boss dr770 drummachine for short breaks between the tracks ...
and those notebooks are still expensive, i wish i had one ....just for making music.

yeah, i can't stand having to chase a mouse around just to move a fader
and you can't use two mice at the same time
you can use two hands at the same time however
yeah i know.....i'm dreaming....$3599 for a suped-up one (1GHz, 1GB DDR RAM, 60GB Ultra ATA Drive, SuperDrive burner, 17" display)
but i want one so bad

i think i'll take out a loan when i've got a decent job, just so i can get one
i think it'd be worth it
equates to about £2200
