i'm just asking because you have to make a song different
if you make it for speakers or headphones.

Ya know back in my day "Pc Speaker" was that little speaker
inside the computer...

Wasn't easy writing music with that, no line in. So you'd
pay $150 for a 8bit Sound Blaster card.

But me.. umm I'd use headphones. Don't want to wake up
everyone :-/

Speakers always.

Headphones are only for when I absolutely have no choice.

And I listen at LOW levels.

Several Reaons:
1. Ear damage. Espicially since when you are writting your
music, your gonna want to rock out to it, and hear all the
little details. Much more damage is done having speakers
close to your ears, then having normal speakers, several
feet from you, even if those speakers are loud.

2. Acoustically, and production wise, writting on speakers
produces better results. If you write/mix something on
speakers, its more likely to sound good on other speakers,
and headphones, where as mixing with headphones, this isnt
true. It leads to alot of issues...

I know small comp speakers are shit... and in that case,
headphones are need to hear the saounds... but in the long
ru, try to get better speakers.

I run my comutor into the line in of my stereo, so i have
good sound.

I need to get real moniters though....

but sometimes (i have the problem because of shitty
speakers) you make a song listening to it on speakers, then
you listend to it on headphones and some places are too
loud. epecially high tones.

yeah, shitty speakers fuck things up.

But like, if you had high quality headphones, and high
quality speakers, the speakers would win out.

You gotta do what ya gotta do... just please dont listen
loud.

Its SO easy to fuck your ears. I took an acoustics class,
and we went into ear damge. Its not fun stuff. Scared the
crap out of me actually...

what's the difference between speakers and monitors? there's
something to do with the way they amp the sound or change
the sound.... i cant remember

well, moniters are speakers...

but moniters are specially made for studio use, and are very
high quality speakers.

i discovered something, and i see that you know something
:)

the last days i connected my pc to the speakers of my vinyl
player (it has its own speakers) they are 25 years old.
but i think the everything sounds clearer and.... deeper
than even on headphones. is this possible ? do vinyl player
speakers have another construction ?
i love these ones

o, btw zeus: i think everything should hear music at normal
volume, i agree.

hmm, my friend was trying to tell me how they were
different, but he couldn't remember how... something more
than the quality i think.

sadist: well, you were using old speakers, so they were
using analouge signals, instead of digital. The compression
is more natural, and "warmer," or "deeper"

mylittlesister: im sure there is difference in construction,
hence why they sound good. But I wouldnt know. I dont know
anything about electronic's construction and the like.

Depends on the speakers and the headphones. I try to use
both when mixing and doing final volume adjustments.

headphones are much better for disecting the sounds,
speakers are better for listening - give a greater sense of
room.

What kind of cans didja get?

I prefer listening in headphones. I get lost in the artist's
little world of sound.

back...

xactly, monitors for mastering and mixdown ... if u don't
have any money for it, mix it on your homespeaker s, while
mastering, compare it with your favourite tracks (hell, one
bird starts singing out there, it's 07:46 am here) it makes
no sense, comparing headphones with speakers,.

I first thought that was a joke :))

PC Speaker is actually that small thing that sometimes beeps
inside your computer :)

And if arranged properly, speakers are a good choice. If you
can't handle the acoustic positioning, choose headphones.
You'll have to later re-mix and re-equalize it to sound good
on both.

my iMac has pretty good speakers!

but i always use headphones in order not to annoy people
with my music... and even if it wasn't annoying them... i'm
too shy
and music is a solitary pleasure for me

monitors are falt response. meaning they add no bass or
treble to your traks, thus making it better for you to
trully hear the frequencies of your work, and eq
accordingly.

there generally not real good for listening to mastered
music on. there generally too flat.

though i do like to listen to aphex real loud om my truths.

Flat = good. I hate speakers and headphones that color the
sound in an attempt to be more "musical". (though with
headphones it's good to have some peaks and notches in the
high end so you can hear detail properly).

Most consumer grade audio equipment is designed for yokels
who are impressed by scooped midrange. Don't ask me why --
the mids are what human ears are optimized to hear.

While I'm ranting, let me add that I despise bass players
who EQ out the midrange on their rigs. My ideal bass guitar
sound is very woody and midrangy - a perfect example is the
bass sound on The Raven by the Stranglers.
