falling leaves do resembe autumn, and autumn is often a metaphor for aging, which leads to dying, just as spring is birth, and summer is the prime of ones life. this is cummings being lonely and fearing death. a brilliant idea, but by no means breakthrough, just cleverly arranged.

well...i think the way it is arranged is pretty breakthrough, and constitutes the meaning of the poem as well...the whole thing is shaped like a one...the word one is in it...the last line 'iness' is supposed to refer to the state of being in one's self i think

one of my favorite poems is by Gerard Manly Hopkins:
Márgarét, áre you grieving Over Goldengrove unleaving? Leáves lÃke the things of man, you With your fresh thoughts care for, can you? Ah! ás the heart grows older It will come to such sights colder By and by, nor spare a sigh Though worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie; And yet you will weep and know why. Now no matter, child, the name: Sórrow's sprÃngs áre the same. Nor mouth had, no nor mind, expressed What heart heard of, ghost guessed: It is the blight man was born for, It is Margaret you mourn for.

"somewhere i have never traveled, gladly beyond any experience, your eyes have their silence: in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me, or which i cannot touch because they are too near;
your slightest look easily will unclose me though i have closed myself as fingers, you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens (touching skillfully, mysteriously) her first rose;
or if your wish be to close me, i and my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly, as when the heart of this flower imagines the snow carefully everywhere descending; nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals the power of your intense fragility: whose texture compels me with the color of its countries, rendering death and forever with each breathing;
(i do not know what it is about you that closes and opens; only something in me understands the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses) nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands."
