dehisce (di-HIS) verb intr.
1. To burst open, as the pod of a plant.
2. To gape.
[When a peapod is ripe after a long wait and bursts open, it's yawning, etymologically speaking. The term dehisce comes from Latin dehiscere
(to split open), from hiscere (to gape, yawn), from Latin hiare (to yawn).
Another term that derives from the same root is hiatus.]

People who know latin usually score 200 points more on the SAT test. If you are uncertain of a words meaning, you can make a very good assumption of it since latin is the root language for many others. Etymology is cool.

Latin is a Romance laguage, you could do better learning other romance languages like spanish or italalian since they didnt stray far from their Latin roots.

it helps on english too... engliah is such a 'scientific' language (linguistic term i think). in english one must know much much more individual words while the build is easy. all languages like that have some of their base in latin. my mother tongue is finnish which is a language with less words and much more flexibilty to use them, while having more forms. thats why i need to learn latin too.
ah. no day without deat linguistics rant.

English is a bastard of a language...it's changed and adopted so many different words from different languages it's a daunting task to grasp it without years of study...
