Amen break tablature

Anyone know where I can find tabs for the amen break? I'll
be programming my own version for a track I'm working on.
Thanks in advance!

you'll be lucky - it's all about the sound of the break not
necessarily the rhythm

It was a one off never to be replicated. You have to use
the original :)

Hmmm, so if I change it, it's not going to sound like the
original done with different sounds. ;(
Well, there goes that idea :(

Damn! Thanks anyway.
maybe if I slow it down and work on it piece by piece I can
transcribe it.

you should get that record - it's great it's slow on that
but the drum and bass blokes ionly use a small segment of it

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2003-01-28 14:47 [#00531885]

I think it seems like I can transcribe it by playing a
slowed, looped version of it several times over.

with :)

...best bet is to use recycle and break it apart that
way...there's a nice 4 bar seg taht gives you every hit you
want...

Its a long time since I last mashed up an amen but from what
I recall, the beats themselves were amazingly on-time for a
human drummer (almost quantized...).....cut it into straight
16ths or 8ths and it's really not far off...

as someone said tho...it's the sound that matters...

offline Mickey Mouse from The Moon on 2003-01-28 23:05 [#00532394]

True true, definatly the sound

I think I know what your getting at though, you want to
convert the same groove to a drum machine and use different
sounds eh?

Its easy, get a sound editor, and replace over the existen
hits your own sounds, and it should work, or go into
recycle, get the amen and splice it up so each hit has a
slice, export a rex file, open up reason, hit the to track
button, and get a redrum and program your own sounds to
match.....

You can mic up a drum set, and experiment with ambience and
different mic'ing techniques and you could get some similiar
sounds id imagine, youd need a full drum kit and drum mics
though

Mic'ing things differently is always good fun

:*)

If you loop the amen break and listen to it for ten minutes
you start to hear pitches in the snare.

I'm scared!

I seem to remember this exact technique being mentioned in
an interview with aaron funk.

Hey, what's this all about? It sounds interesting.
Pitches in the snares?

offline martinhm from York (United Kingdom) on 2003-01-29 03:09 [#00532569]
Points: 1657 Status: Lurker

oh, not the pitching part. I meant the replacing of the
drum/snares hits in the amen break with other sounds. aaron
says he uses it a lot to capture the rhythm of the break,
but with some screwy sounds.

What's an Amen Break? Some kind of Drum n' Bass-sound?

i absolutley LOVE that breakbeat

and to think, it came from a track called Amen My Brother,
like old skool funk or something!

sometimes i just CAN't get that break out of my head

just fyi, Atari Teenage Riot use that break quite a lot,
usually heavily distorted and with that gabba kick
drum

breakbeats, also amen, apache, humpty dump, funky drummer,
think about it and so on ...

i love breakbeats, but i don't know much about the genre and
everything, i'm trying to get into it

the only stuff that i've heard that's d&b is stuff like Roni
Size, and he's fucking amazing in my opinion

i like the apache break, and funky drummer
:)

yeah but anyone can sample a bit of a drumloop off a record
and then hit the trigger key over and over. it's not exactly
musical talent is it?

what would impress me would be a young current band who
actually played instruments. i mean, somebody had to
actually 'play' the amen break in the first place didn't he?
on real drums.

with drumsticks.

heard of those?

yeah, its not overly difficult to play on drums...

but to program your own amen is a little more difficult.
lots of ghost hits and stuff.

Yup, I make all my own sounds anymore--so sampling is not an
option unless I can't tab it out. I've used recycle to
analyze it in 10th second splices. I'm going to work on it
today and see what I can do.

As for the reason technique, not on this 200mhz, 64megs of
ram system I can't. ;)

reason does work on a system with that spec, i've had it
running on a p200 32mb ram system

just don't use too many fx machines and comps

where'd you hear my stuff?

from my zebox site?

lol, i did those whilst i was in college circa April-May
2002

i don't have a computer at home or anything, so i can't do
any stuff

the only access i have to a music ready comp is my mates,
and he's asleep half the time! lol

i really wish i could, because i'd love to get my stuff out
there in the open, so people can hear my stuff, but until i
can get some equipment ie a comp, i'm fucked

i fucking love it, it's brilliant

i wish i knew a drummer who could drum it ;)

did you use any compressor for it ? or maximizers ? i'm sure
it would kicks more with some hard knee compression ... and
i like it a big more complex, more breaks, pitching and cut
off filters ...

i did try to use comps, but i can never seem to get the hang
of compression :(

i mainly used reason, i compressed it in there by rewiring a
comp into the main mixer

then i exported to cubase, compressed through there, and
then a used the compressors on the Yamaha O2R digital desk
(that's what we had in college) and burned straight to cd

i was disappointed with the guitars though - i didn't get
them mixed right :(

they sounded great on the studio monitors, but wh had no
nearfields, so i couldn't tell what it'd sound like on a
stereo
