I just got back from this movie. Wow, this movie was right
up my ally! I loved it! It had an interesting message, and
the music and the coreography was excellent. Wonderful

So what did everyone here think about it?

I was amazed to find out that all of the main actors did
their own singing and dancing routines

I wish I could have seen the origional play, but it never
came close to where I live sadly. I am glad they brought it
to the big screen

Yay!

"i'm gonna whack my old man/right up his alley! UGH! you
like that, dont cha?"

taken from cassetteboy's "JOliver" track. totally irrelevant
of course. :)

Thank you Phresh for that wonderful insight.

The camera work in this film was just awesome, the use of
contrast, wow, really cool stuff!

I thought gangs of new york was just ok... I was really
dissapointed... I didnt find a solid argument, the love
story was totally unbelievable and it really happens nothing
in the 3 hours...

it was not bad cos there were lots of great things too, but
due to what I said I just find it ok

I hate Renne Z. so that kinda put a damper on things.
Overall I'd say that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would
be.

for me it was a bit strange to see richaerd geere singing
and dancing

but the song where he is a ventrilocuist is the best for me

we clearly have diametric tastes here..

gangs of new york strikes a personal chord with me on so
many levels.. so it is a bit different for me.. I also didnt
think there was anything that hard to believe about the love
story.. and it really wasnt a prevalent theme in the plot..
and to say nothing happens at any point during the duration
of the film is just rediculous

**********************************
ok it was only exageration.

thinks I like:

some individual actings (danney day leawis)

the scenario: great clothing and ambient

the social picture:
how the movie describes a compilcated social situation with
inmigrants and war (not very different from nowadays) is
very good also

the end:
the way we see how the fight between the gangs finally is
eclipsed by the overall social problem, how the revenge is
in part all fucked up by this...
it gives a very realistic aproach

these are very good things of the movie.
-----------------------------------------------

now, things I dont like:

its just a revenge of a boy that saw how his father died in
a fight... why does he hate day lewis?? I mean this bad man,
really admires his father, and he only killed him in a
fight, it was not some kind of betraition or something... I
dont find the reason for such a hate, above all when
leonardo sees how much danniel day lewis admires his father,
and admires the way he died.
so as it is only a revenge and >I dont find sense for that
revenge I just cant enter the deepest feeling of the movie.

the love story:
I would believe a sexual or phisical attraction but love?? I
cant see any reason of why those two young people fall
inlove... at least the movie doesnt give us a clue... it
looks more a sexual attraction and suddenly without being
explained in the movie they love eeachother

would hate the bastard!

well if my father went to a fight like that..its clear that
he has many chances of being killed... it is not as if thos
bad guys came to my house at night and raped my mother you
know... its an open and declared fight... like a little
war... you know what i mean... he wasnt murdered, he died in
a "war"

how can you watch gang of new york and chicago? like moulin
rouge..where is the thrill in ?
fewwww
there are other countries on earth..

who said anything about any love between them? and even if
they were in love.. why would you need clear/blatent clues
to tell you so? and why should there be reasons for why it
lead to love it if it were so?

it was also a plot thickener.. it adds another
conflict/motive for amsterdam if she is connected directly
to daniel day lewis' character

does anyone know which song is playing (that march-type
song) when they're preparing for battle in the beginning and
in the flashback scenes

exactly thats what bothers me... it seems that the love
story is just there to make things more complex...its like a
bit artificial in the whole role...
only imo

of course there are great filmes apart from hollywood super
productions (which tend to be really bad)
but sometimes I need an easy story... with not much thinking
in it... and in this cases these filmes work great...

hmmm, musicals aren'tm really my thing... but chicago, well
I've seen previews and it does look pretty good... seems
like a real good story, and the music just enhances that,
correct me if I'm wrong... that being instead of just like
pure music for everything...

I doubt I'll see it in theatres... probably rent it when it
comes out on dvd...

It's pretty much music all the way, far more so than in,
say, Moulin Rouge.
