It's a genre, stands for emotional hardcore. Consists of "emotional" lyrics with hard rock, to the best of my knowledge. I can't stand it. heh

emo is short for crap, except for some of the emo bands who were making it before it was a national phemonemon. fugazi was the first real emo band and they 0wn. dismemberment plan were great too (they just broke up). some of the other stuff's ok too; i love the emo tribute to bjork over @ hushrecords.com. but most emo is awful.
emo is actually short for "emotional rock". in other words, guys with feelings.

I think Thursday might be Emo. Pitchforkmedia.com called them "screamo" which I feel is more accurate. They also said they sucked, which I feel is accurate as well.
No offense to any Thursday fans. Feel free to yell at me :)

if slint were emo then they're great too. and if slint counts then mogwai too. but i'd lump both those bands in with the post-rock crowd.

that's pretty much how i feel if you were to strip away the niceties i add cos people are constantly offended by my opinions. just like rap music is music to make teenagers feel like they're badass and have overcome so many of life's struggles when really mom and dad pay for all their bills and they've never been a victim of any kind of prejudice or oppression in their life. and metal is music that makes teenagers think that they've usurped control of their lives which they wreck with their own stupidity and apathy. and just like...

emo used to describe hard-rock bands, like xlr described in his first post. go to http://www.fourfa.com to learn what was known as emo originally.
but it's now used to describe punk bands that sing about their break ups (with girls), or any other kind of music that sounds sad.
so if you ask a punk kid he'll tell you that bands like weezer and radiohead are emo. or any other whiny band/singer for that matter.
oh yes for emo kids also label any independent rock band as emo (pavement, mogwai, bult to spill, modest mouse, etc)
in conclusion in these days emo has no meaning. emo kids think everything's emo.
but if it has to be used as a genre i'd use it to describe early emo bands, as fugazi, jawbreaker, native nod, etc.
a more recent example of classic emo would be "at the drive in" i think that's the most modern band that represents what emo was.

current emo would be:
taking back sunday yellowcard something corporate thursday finch etc.
all these could somewhat fall under poppy punk too, so whatever. I happen to really like Yellowcard, Finch and many of these bands.

I used to like Emo, but then I turned 20..not like age really matters I guess I should say and then I found better music
Emo is good sometimes but its always the same shit
*Jimmy eat world is the only emo I like. *Thursdays is pretty good *Hey Mercedes is alright *Get up kids is fun *the used has good songs *Weezer's is old skool so it wouldnt be considered emo, but its old stuff is very Emo (emo shouldnt be classified as shitty)
Can't think of anymore

Dashboard confessional?
My mate pulled me along to that gig at reading, and he was playing. The biggest wet blanket ever, just boring, tedious and un-remarkable. the sort of stuff that is part of this whole 'demographic' nature of modern music. Fuck off!

I have a guy rocking a guitar in my avatar. No one besides you or I know who he is, and everyone knows the H isn't emo.
I was just making a point, as seemed I made it obvious that I would like that kind of music.........

no no no... not highwaters but just rolled up jeans. i do that somtimes *pauses to roll up jeans* but i think emo is currently an attitude or something, associated with a few different types of music that may or may not be 'emo' music as it was originally conceived. like that bitch last year who was really condescending to me, or that guy alex, their emo. emo is a state of being, like parallel to nirvana maybe.
